    Check out:

    http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1006-200-5465636.html

"To keep the juggernaut rolling, Sony will be rapidly releasing products such as a new handheld computer, high-definition TVs and an Internet-surfing appliance. The company, for instance, will soon launch a new, and likely cheaper, version of the Clie, its handheld that runs on the Palm operating system"

Looks like the new Clie will be competitive with the new Palm and Handsprings at around $400. If the new Clie PEG-N700C is what it suppose to be and at that price, Palm and Handspring will face some stiff competition.

The m500 and m505 will be available later in May/June. The m500 or m505 is not available now, but the Sony is available. The m500 is not "compatible" (comparable?) to the PEG-N700C, the m505 is.

You're right the Clie PEG-N700C is only available in Japan right now, but there are reports that Sony plans to release the Clie to the US in mid-summer.

This is from an earlier article:

    http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1006-200...html?tag=cd_pr

"The new unit will go on sale April 7 in Japan, although the company plans to start taking orders on its Japanese Web site next week. A Sony representative said that the new Clie will launch in the United States this year, with an announcement expected sometime around midyear."

"Although the U.S. handheld model may not have the exact same features or price as the Japanese unit, it is expected to have the ability to play music along with the improved 320 pixels by 320 pixels screen. Other Palm-based handhelds display only 160 pixels by 160 pixels."

The article on cnet today further supports that Sony is planning to release the clie to US markets.

So if the reports that the m500 and m505 are going to be available in May/June, then the Sony will be available around the same time.

What I've heard (And I can't remember where) was that the announcement would be mid-year with a release in the Fall.

Really though, nothing new that hasn't been disscussed in the other Clie thread. With conversion I believe it retails for $419 in Japan and if I recall correctly the original Clie sold for more in Japan than here.

Here are some new pictures of the Sony Clie PEG-N700C.

    http://www.go2mac.com/displaynews.cfm?newsid=7880

Some of the rumored testers complained that the graphics is slow at 320x320 resoulution. This may be a problem for the Clie 2, I guess it needs the ARM processor to take full advantage of Clie's capabilities.

I really like this Sony, it can very well be my next PDA, but still waiting for Handspring's answer to the m505.

Sony would definitely not develop a Palm with 320x320 screen if it were too slow.
Think about Sony Japan's website, where they present the Clie's capability to play high-res color videos.
Perhaps the new Sony has an additional GPU (maybe a GeForce3 ? ) built in for the new screen.

Here's a review of the Clie 2 in English, very informative.

    http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...3669#904803669

The reviewer likeed the clie, he was very impressed with the screen and resolution. Very high praises .

Also commented on its speed, got a brenchmark of 137% and only 140% using Afterburner 3.0t. Seemed kinda slow, considering that I can overclock my Platinum to 303% . But he said that most programs run without any noticable lag.

He also made comments on the body and form of the unit. The audio remote control was also mentioned, I thought it was kinda neat that Sony designed one end of the remote to be used as a stylus.

    Very cool article.

Oh yeah, palminfocenter (http://www.palminfocenter.com/) has info. on some of the new memory stick expansion modules that are coming out later this year. A camera with 100,000-pixel CMOS image sensor capable of taking 332 x 288 pixel photos, a GPS, and a fingerprint reader. Looks kinda cool.

Wow. A metal case...that's actually a great feature.

Nice article. I think the Clie will be my next PDA.

It's nice, but I'm not sure I like the sound of, "...The so-called Magic Gate Memory Stick offers protection for copyrighted content, such as music files..." If that "protection" is too strict, Sony isn't getting my money.

    I've decided to become enigmatic.

Quite right, and Sony would definitely not develop a color Palm with such a lousy, dim screen that they would be afraid to release it outside of Japan...oops, wait -- they already did!
