Harriett Miers, meet the late-night crew...

"Big news this morning at the White House, President Bush defended his nominee, Harriet Miers, calling her 'plenty bright.' Not only that, but then the president said Miers has 'real purdy hair.' Then he got on a mule and headed south."
    --Conan O'Brien

"She's never been a judge before...never served on the bench. This is part of President Bush's strategy of surrounding himself with people who are also in over their heads." --Jay Leno

"Welcome to the 'Late Show,' ladies and gentlemen. It's like the Supreme Court, anyone can get in here."
    --David Letterman

"As you might expect some people are criticizing the pick, especially conservative Republicans who worry that Harriet Miers is too liberal. Other critics say she's not a good pick because she hasn't been a judge before. Uh, had Paula Abdul been a judge before? Nobody had a problem when they picked her."
    --Jimmy Kimmel

"Well, certainly the president can claim executive privilege. But in the this case, I think with a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court, you can't play, you know, Hide the Salami, or whatever it's called."
    --Howard Dean on Hardball

Thanks for sharing, tstright. I'm very surprised at such a high percentage.

I researched the backgrounds of about half this list (up to McReynalds). Most of them were either ex-cabinet members or ex-attorney generals. The interesting ones are Henry Baldwin, who has an occassional mental illness. And James McReynalds, who was criticized for being a "scrooge" and an anti-semite.

What do you all think of the possibility (heard it on the radio, not my original thought) that the Miers nomination is a ploy?

She doesn't seem to have a big following on either side. Not many objections but just nothing outstanding either.

What if she withdraws her name from the process and the President brings in someone he and his REALLY want?

Wouldn't that give them a "you're just never satisfied" answer for critics when they jump on choice #3 (including Roberts)?

    Could this be a ruse?

One question why would he do that?

It would be a clever (yet sneaky) way of getting a person in who otherwise would get lots of critisism with the political backlash..
Bit conspiracy theory.. But I can understand why someone would come up with it..

The American people's time is NOT a game to be played and neither is the SC! And if that is what he(Bush) believes then he is clearer NOT meant for the job. The American people I would hope would see this for what it is.

I am predicting that Supreme Crony Meirs will "voluntarily withdraw" her name from consideration within the next ten days.

She will cite some nonsense, junior will express profound regret and dishonestly blame democrats -- and then he'll nominate some truly horrific Scaley or uncle Thomas clone...

I don't think it's a ruse with Miers. I think he really wants her in the SCOTUS. I think there is too many issues that come up if he wanted to try to sneak a different nominee in.

She is extremely loyal to Pres. Bush. I can't see why he wouldn't want her there. I am a little surprised that the far right is fighting her nomination so much?

    I entirely agree --

This 2 minute NBC News piece illustrates this.

junior was not engaging in some kind of ruse -- she is the kind of person he wants on the Supreme Court -- or the head of the State Dept., or head of FEMA, or Vice President etc. etc. etc.

What's awful is knowing that the next nominee will be even worse -- and that the next election is a year away.

The righties are obsessed with getting a true believer appointed because they understand that their day has probably passed -- and that after next November they will no longer have absolute power.

George Will lays down some smack (...and what an odd mental image that is...) on Harriet Miers:

Red or Blue....you do know you we are talking about politicians, right?

It is all a game, just like 2 weeks before any nominee is presented some on the left were saying "Whoever Bush picks, we are united and we will oppose it. We are all ready to filibuster any nominee he proposes...unless of course they are an ultra liberal, then they will pass with full approval."

I hope she's not coerced into prematurely withdrawing -- I would much rather there be a laborious struggle, a filibuster, republican vs. evangelistic acromony, and a final humiltating defeat in the senate.

here's an interesting 2 min. clip from the McGlaughlin talking head show discussing her nomination:

    Meir's nomination prospects

I have less confidence in writing this than I had with Meirs -- but I don't think Alito will win confirmation to the Supremes.

The precedent that the righties created through defeating Meirs based on her not being conservative enough frees the left from any shyness about addressing the imminent danger that awaits Roe should Alito get confirmed.

junior's poisonous level of popularity (will) might give backbone to border state democrats and northern moderate republicans.

Any senator facing election next november will be tempted to look for an oppurtunity to show independence from junior.

Enough opposition will acrete that a slow motion "filibuster" will gain traction, and the "nuclear" filibusting busting strategy cannot be imposed without risking a wholesale rebelion against the righties.

My heart may be deluding my head -- but such are my hopes...
