Even if "only" the private banks were involved, I would not necessarily say they lied. Some Jewish organisations used to claim that there were billions of US$ in dormant accounts for holocaust victims, while that number was far below US$ 100 million, with a lot of that amount most likely not from holocaust victims. It wasn't that they were hiding anything for financial reasons or so. Keep in mind that there are over US$2 trillion (2000 billion) of assets in Swiss banks so 50 or so million really would not be worth it.
Your country's government dealt with Nazi Germany. Shipped raw material right up until almost the end of the war. Raw material that was paid for with stolen war booty. In a further act of appeasement, your country's government abused US internees. (Many of whom flew combat damaged airplanes that were shot down by the Swiss Air Force...operating German built ME-109s.) Let's not even mention the officially sanctioned policy of turning Jews away at the border. Quit preaching.

I didn't know that it wasn't until 1971 that women were granted suffrage. Given what the 19th Amendment has wrought here, that was pretty progressive.

    FYI:
England had that in 1918, Finland even in 1906... and New Zealand in 1893..

    Countries without women's suffrage
Some countries do not extend suffrage to women, or extend it differently from that extended to men (this list does not include countries where neither men nor women have suffrage):

Bhutan -- One vote per family in village-level elections
    Brunei
Lebanon -- Proof of education required for women, not required for men. Voting compulsory for men, optional for women.
    Saudi Arabia
Kuwait -- But voted in 2005 to introduce suffrage for women older than 21 (to take effect in the 2007 national elections) [1].

I think it is because the mayority isnt discussing with an open mind but trying to enforce their view onto others
Wow. Thanks for clearing that up - all this time I thought "flame" meant a gratuitous personal attack.

Seriously, all I've seen since I've been posting in OT has been a discussion of issues from different points of view. People on both sides think they're correct and are trying to debate and present facts to sway the other side - what's wrong with that?

if they are open to the facts of the other party there is no problem with that, in fact that is great.

Problem is that nowadays everything is black and white and people seem to refuse to look at other people's point of view..
From that things some to get worse till people start using personal attack to 'proof their point' but really it just shows lack of real arguments..

I mean look at this. This is a thread that started about Kuwait giving money to the US for hurricane relief. Twenty-one posts later we are arguing about when women were granted the right to vote in the United States. It is ridiculous!

Fair enough. Perhaps the original assertion that the US (or a US charity) is somehow *wrong* in accepting a $500 million gift from an ally for Katrina victims is something more should be open to. Or perhaps the majority correctly judged it to be what it in fact was - simple-minded anti-americanism.

Just to clarify a few points:

    - The government was not a party in this, it was the privately owned banks
    - Swiss banks spent about one billion US$ fot the investigation under supervision of Jewish and other institutions. The whole investigation showed that the dormant accounts from potential holocaust victims were well below US$100 million, and for most of that money it was uncertain if it had anything to do with dormant accounts from Nazi victims. (http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/9707/23/swiss.banks/)
    - Still, Swiss banks payed US$ 1.25 billion to Jewish organisations, more than 10 times the amount in dormant accounts from Nazi victims.
-The Jewish organizations always insisted how urgent it was for the Swiss banks to pay that money (including huge punitive damages, so to say), because the holocaust victims were already very old. The money was paid in 1998, and guess what: they still could not distribute the money... strange, isn't it?
    - While in Switzerland the case dormant WWII accounts from Jews was settled in 1998, it turns out that Israeli banks failed to do that to the present day.
You should check this out. It apparently goes over a lot that they fail to teach you in Swiss schools. http://store.aetv.com/html/product/index.jhtml?id=16127

And by the way, as far as the $1.25 billion that Swiss banks paid out, if you just factor in inflation since 1945 on US $100 million, that just covers it. Congrats, you paid out exactly what was put in. That doesn't include the interest you've been generating on it for 50 years.
