    word = steak
    ADD one letter = steaks
    DELETE one letter = kate
    you cannot substitute letters = steap (k replaced with p)
    I'm confused now, did the rules change and he first post was not updated? It says (among other things):

    Ignore my post!! LOL It used to be that you couldn't substitute letters... but obviously I'm wrong on that one now!!

    Sorry... didn't know about that update and thought I was losing my mind (which could still be the case!)

    I just saw the update note in the first post:
    New rules added for September (especially since the practice is already well underway)

    The substitution rule was there since the beginning (and can see it being used in several posts of the first page). I hope you are able to find your mind.

    In keeping with the purpose of the thread, I guess I need to come up with a new word (one that will likely force the next user to use my favorite "rule #3").

    migrate -> métrage

    (see http://french.about.com/od/vocabulary/g/metrage.htm)

    Actually in looking - the sub rule was added recently - but no biggie, it was my mistake for not noticing the update.

    Meager

    I guess ShopHarim changed the rule to reflect what people were doing from the start. (The game is better with this way.)

    Thanks for playing! Here's my (probably last) response (of the night):
    Meager -> geared

    PS: I'm not one to usually question a moderator, but the first post in this thread was "Last edited by shopharim; 09/01/2005 at 11:52 AM." so I suspect that the substitution rule really was in effect for over 5 years now. I don't consider 5 years to be "recent".

    Ouch! I'll use the same image with another word that describes how I feel about the end result in your picture:

    grated -> tragedy
