New York, July 11--(AP) Tom Cruise said he learned to overcome his learning disability through Scientology.

"When I was about 7, I had been labeled dyslexic," he told People magazine for its July 21 issue. "I'd try to concentrate on what I was reading, then I'd get to the end of the page and have very little memory of anything I'd read. I would go blank, feel anxious, nervous, bored, frustrated, dumb." After "Top Gun" came out in 1986, Cruise became a Scientologist and discovered the ``Study Technology'' the religion's founder, L. Ron Hubbard, developed in the 1960s. "I realized I could absolutely learn anything that I wanted to learn," Cruise said. Now the 41-year-old actor is a founding board member of the Hollywood Education and Literacy Project, a nonprofit group that uses Hubbard's teaching techniques in a secular setting. "I don't want people to go through what I went through," Cruise said. "I want kids to have the ability to read, to write, to understand what people are saying to them, to be able to solve life's problems."

I have so much respect for him. If this were 225 years ago he would have been among the founders!

I think he is alright guy, a little off center, but none the less an alright guy.

Maybe I should clear this up. I think all Scientology people are freaks. Their headquarters are right down the street from me. Duing high school we would have scavenger hunts, and one of the items was to get a photo with one of the brainwashers(Scientologist).

I feel the same way. If he would get off the Scientology horse, he would do well to help his popularity (and lessen the tabloid front page ads).

Nicole kidman is an absolutely exquisite lady. Perfect catch. AND she can act.

Tom cruise is a dork who happened to be in the right place at the right time in hollyweird. Tom, CANNOT act. AND, he's an absolute 100% horse's ***. STILL! Certain things will quite simply never ever change

I dont know about that. The guy has been in a lot of films...not all of them were huge successes but I cant really agree that he has been in the right place at the right time. Plus, internationally, he seems to be a superstar draw.

well, he's never won an oscar. although most of his costars have.
I realize he has international draw, and that he is popular, but being popular doesn't mean he is highly skilled or a GREAT actor.
I think many have offered him movie roles for his popularity, ( his box office draw ) not his skills. I'd say he is mediocre - and also very lucky. and often times its better to be lucky than good - tom cruise is exhibit A.

Problem with Tom is that he allways seems to play the same role: the cleanshaven cute hero.
Born on the 4th of july seems to be the only exeption..

Getting nominated for or winning an Oscar has nothing to do with being a great actor - it is 50% giving a single stellar performance and 50% politics.

I disagree about him not being able to act, and so will just about anyone who has direct him (they say he's the hardest working actor they've seen). He also does most of his own stunts (if the studio will let him).

The Color of Money, Interview with the Vampire, Vanilla Sky, Collateral, Far and Away.

You just remember the pretty-boy roles.

I don't think he's a bad actor, Top Gun is one of my favorite movies, as well as Legend.

However, the Scientology crap as well as the interview he had with Matt Lauer makes me seriously doubt his mental capacity. Scientology was founded by L. Ron Hubbard, who was quoted many times as saying something to the effect of "If you want to really make some money in this world, then start a religion". Do I really need to say any more?

The Color of Money: still a pretty boy role IMHO..
Interview with the Vampire: havent seen that one.. but you probably have a point on that one..
Vanilla Sky: though one of his better ones, he did play a pretty boy role, but he lost that after the accident
Collateral: not seen that one yet..
Far and Away: pretty boy role IMHO
