U.S., Iraqi troops repel coordinated attacks

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/i...q_x.htm?csp=15

BAGHDAD (AP) — U.S. and Iraqi troops repelled a series of coordinated insurgent attacks in southern Baghdad, killing six rebels and capturing 12, the U.S. military said Saturday. There were no U.S. casualties.

    -----------------

At nearly the same time, a suicide attacker drove a truck loaded with explosives into a nearby Iraqi army checkpoint, killing an Iraqi soldier.

A suicide car bomber tried to attack another Iraqi position in the area, but a U.S. tank fired and hit the car, killing the driver and causing the car bomb to explode prematurely, the U.S. command said. Iraqi police said three bystanders were wounded.

    ----------------

Over the next two hours, insurgents tried to regroup for further attacks on the two Iraqi army posts but were driven off by U.S. and Iraqi fire, the statement added.

    ---------------

In a statement Saturday, al-Qaeda in Iraq warned Sunni Arabs that voting in the Oct. 15 referendum was tantamount to rejecting Islam. The group has claimed responsibility for many deadly attacks, including suicide car bombings and kidnappings. It is led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Sunni from Jordan who has vowed to attack Iraq's majority Shiite Muslim population in a bid to start a civil war.

In an Internet posting Saturday, al-Qaeda's wing in Iraq warned Sunni Arabs that supporting the constitution was no less than abandoning Islam and that "voting for the constitution is tantamount to raising the flag of the crusaders on the land."

"Drafting the constitution means believing that the religion of Islam is incomplete," the statement said. "Those who call on you to participate in the constitution vote have not accepted Islam as a religion."

The statement's authenticity could not be verified.

Marines Find Bomb Factory in Western Iraq
    Monday, August 08, 2005

BAGHDAD, Iraq — U.S. Marines discovered a car bomb factory Monday in a western Iraqi town near where 20 members of the American unit were killed last week, the U.S. military said.

Six vehicles rigged with explosives were found in the hideout in the northern part of Haqlaniyah, one of a cluster of towns in western Anbar province (search) long believed to be a stronghold of Iraqi insurgents and foreign fighters.

"All of the rigged vehicles were destroyed and secondary explosions were observed by the Marines," a Marine statement said.

U.S. and Iraqi forces also found five roadside bombs Monday on a road in Haqlaniyah, the statement said. All were detonated in place, it said

    ------------

On Sunday, U.S. Marines and Iraqi soldiers discovered a bomb in a building in Haqlaniyah (search). Three 155 mm artillery rounds, weighing more than 100 pounds apiece, were wired to a desk inside the building, the U.S. statement said.

OPERATION ABLE WARRIOR NETS MORE THAN 40 TERRORISTS

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Task Force Baghdad Soldiers conducted Operation Able Warrior to defeat terror cells operating west of the Baghdad International Airport in the early morning hours of Aug. 4.

In less than three hours, Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment, 48th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division conducted a series of simultaneous attacks and captured 41 suspected terrorists, including three foreign fighters.

“We went out and did what we set out to do - this was a picture-perfect mission,” said Lt. Col. Steve McCorkle, commander of 2nd Bn., 121st Inf. Reg. from Warner Robins, Ga.

Operation Able Warrior was conducted in order to disrupt car bombing cells and roadside bomb emplacers, and prevent them from planning, preparing and carrying out terrorist attacks in the area.

“We want to set the Iraq Army up for success. This operation will help the Iraqi Security Forces take more control of the day-to-day operations,” said Lt. Col. Thomas Carden, a spokesperson for the 48th BCT and resident of Americus, Ga.

COALITION AND IRAQI SECURITY FORCES COMBINED OPERATIONS DISRUPT TERRORISTS

Coalition and Iraqi security forces combined operations disrupt terrorists

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Multi-National Corps - Iraq operations continue to place pressure on terrorist operations in Iraq with Coalition and Iraqi security forces conducting more than 182 combined and independent offensive operations throughout the country since late July.

Results from operations conducted between July 30 and Aug. 5 include the discovery and clearance of 109 improvised explosive devices and 32 caches; the capture of 805 anti-Iraqi forces with the subsequent detention of 493; and 11 foreign fighters who were either captured or killed.

“These are great successes for the Coalition and Iraqi security forces. The terrorists’ command and control will continue to deteriorate, as the Coalition forces continue to pressure terrorists and disrupt their operations network,” said Col. Jessie Farrington, MNC-I chief of operations.

Highlights from Aug. 6 and 7:

In Mosul, Coalition forces detained two individuals for handing out terrorist propaganda. The two individuals revealed the location of their source and during a resulting raid; Iraqi Police killed one terrorist later confirmed to be a Syrian national. In a combined raid, Coalition and Iraqi security forces captured three men connected to terror leader Abbass Fadhel Zangana.

Near Hit, Iraqi intervention forces and Marines captured three terrorists in a truck towing another vehicle modified as a car bomb.

In Haqlaniyah, Coalition forces destroyed a booby-trapped house that contained improvised explosive devices.

In Baghdad, Coalition forces captured a car bomb and four terrorists who were involved in a car bomb cell. Ten members of a terrorist cell in Sadr City were captured by Iraqi forces.

    IED SAFE HAVEN DESTROYED

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces destroyed a house in Baghdad August 6 after confirmation that the structure was being used by terrorists as a storage site for improvised explosive devices.

A detainee, captured earlier this week, provided credible information that the house was purchased as a safe haven for terrorists as well as for storage of weapons and explosives. Coalition Forces discovered that the house contained timing devices, detonation systems and improvised explosive devices.

Before conducting the operation, Coalition Forces cleared all civilians and temporarily moved personal property to a safe distance as a precautionary measure. Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) technicians then destroyed the house. Several secondary explosions resulted.

“Those who recruit, encourage and send suicide bombers on their missions have no interest in improving the lives of the Iraqi people,” said Col. Bill Buckner, spokesperson for the Multi-National Corps-Iraq. “Their only interest is to instill fear among the population and to create unrest as the country works towards self-government.”

In a related operation prior to the destruction of the house, EOD troops destroyed a vehicle after discovering it was rigged for use as a suicide bomb. Coalition forces inspected the vehicle and realized that the trigger could only be activated by the driver while inside the car.

One terrorist was detained at the location of the car bomb. His name is being withheld for operational security.

No civilians were harmed in either operation.

Just drop the H-bomb and be done with it? All this money were spending that could go into our school system.

And that would make our schools here at home safer how? Talk about a perfect AQ recruiting poster!

It's not the Iraqis that we are after....it is the both the insurgence and foriegn terrorists who have come over to join the fight.

EDIT: Sorry I fell for a comment reply!
