For a buck fifty, I could be a point and shoot and throw off a ten story building just to see what happens guy. :-)

Seriously, though, I have been looking to buy a DSLR eventually. I like the idea and have used "fake" slrs (active viewfinder looking through the lense) for years and hate it when I have to use one of those cameras where the viewfinder only approximates what the camera sees.

Yeah, I had a Nikon 990 back in the day (that swivel one -- awesome cam), but wanted more control... Got an Olympus E-10 which was like a "simulated" DSLR (not a real through the lens viewfinder). Then moved on to the D30, 10D, and now 20D (awesome).

Check out the Rebel XT -- looks pretty sweet for the money. Dell had a deal recently with coupons and stuff where you could get the body only for like $819 USD.

With little kids, I AM a point & shoot AF girl! It's just too much to deal with the camera & the kids. A decent point & shoot gives me good birthday party shots, which is what I want right now.

Photography is a minor passion of mine, so I can appreciate the siren call of a NICE camera, even if it is chunky.

anyone fluent in cameras wanna make a recommendation for me? I'm looking to spend under 400, mostly looking for a digicam I can take anywhere. I've been peeking at the 5 megapixel exilim, decent cam?

Hands down the BEST camera for the money (under $400) is the Canon S500 5 megapixle digital Elph.

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...bosnation0e-20

Amazon has a couple left at $319 (amazing price!) The image quality kicks the exilim's buttocks. Amazon has it for this price "while supplies last". I've never seen them say that about an item before, so I'm gussing they don't have many left. If I didn't already have an elph I'd jump all over this deal.

    Good luck!

I have a friend who has the S500...it's a pretty amazing camera for its size.

I don't think you get redeye so much when you are effectively using the camera. AND, if I do happen to get redeye, I can always clean it up in a photo editor.

Any of the Elphs are extremely portable. If you want one that uses SD, the top of the line one is the SD500 7 megapixles. 30fps video at 640X480. It's the latest and the greatest and that's why it's just shy of $500.

If you want to stay under the $400 mark go with the SD400 5 megapixles.

If it was me, I'd spring the extra hundred. I read the revews for it over on Steves Digicams and it sounds hot!

Sorry, don't want to start a flamewar, but 7MP in a compact camera isnt that kind of pointless? in such a small camera the lenses can hardly be good enough to warrent 7MP... its like a powerfull motorbike with tires of a pushbike..
Seems like the megapixel thing gets higher and higher more because of the advertizing power than a actual need/usefullness..

I've had my new camera for a week and still getting to know it...

It's a Nikon D100 and I have absolutely no buyer's remorse like I usually do on everything I buy... I love it.

For the last couple of years I've used a Kodak EasyShare DX4900 just to get quick pictures when needed but my camera before that was a Nikon FE with a 1:1.2 (big glass and fast) 50mm NIKKOR lens in addition to other 3rd party lenses which I bought when working overseas in Riyadh and Jeddah back in the 80's... btw, got a shot back then of a humungous giant bicycle outdoor artwork which was placed in Jeddah by another company as part of the Saudi beautification program.

I've really missed using my SLR and I love this D100 and the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm 1:3.5-4.5G lens. I haven't tried my old 1.2 on it yet... all manual anyway.
