My wife needs one for work and we're wondering how feasible it is to copy CD's she has on to the IPOD?

How long does it take per disc?

Does it all have to go through ITunes to put them on there? Does that mean that the songs have to be on our hard drive first and then on the Ipod?

Is there something about an IPOD that the competitors can't do or vice versa? We have a ton of *ahem* legally acquired MP3's. Can they all go on to the IPOD or do you have to have some funky proprietary format like Itunes "M4P" format?

    TIA

You can take a directory(s) of MP3 and drop them into the Itunes window and they will all be added to the Ipod, depending on the bitrate it could take minutes or about 30 minutes to load up your Ipod...you are not required to use any propietary format...just drag and drop, I actually have mine full of .wav files,

Also another program I use instead of Itunes is Anapod http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/

As for ripping your CD's to hard drive, use a program called EAC(Exact Audio Copy) and it will take minutes to rip the songs dependant on the speed of your CD drive.

There is also a way to rip CDs in iTunes. The amount of time it will take to "rip" each CD will depend on the bitrate you choose and the amount of track on the CD.

I have my bitrate at 160kb. CD tracks are recorded at about 128 kb. My CDs average about 15 to 20 minutes.

a great resource is the ipod 101 articles at ipodlounge.com

Specifically, how to import songs into itunes..

I use 128 AAC to bring into itunes. Unfortunately, those do not play with pockettunes.

If you buy a song from Napster or someplace else, can you still use it?

Why can't they play in pTunes?

And about 128 AAC, if sound quality is going to be very important for my wife because she's going to play it over a stereo system, should she use a higher bitrate and bite the bullet and get a bigger hard drive?

As far as 128 vs 192. Some people will tell you that you cant hear the difference, others will tell you that you can. I used to use 192 but scaled down to 128 as I have about 80gigs of music that I rotate through my ipod so I wanted to have more songs on there.

I can hear a difference. I generally rip @320 myself for mp3's, unless I'm limited by space, then I go to 192. But my preference is .flac or .ape, but very few devices seem to support those, plus they aren't the smallest of files once converted.

Just find a good balance between size and sound.

AAC is apples format. You can use mp3 fine and they will play on any mp3 player.
Hopefully pocket tunes will add AAC to their formats list.
I agree with Louis, I can't tell the difference between 128 and 192. If you really are concerned with quality use Apple Lossless format in itunes.
As for ripping with Itunes, stick your cd in the slot, and press the import button in the right hand corner of itunes. Can't get any easier than that

Your files will not be protected. I often do this to the albums I buy off of the Itunes Music Store. I burn them to a disk. Delete the protected files and re-import them. If you import them as a mp3 then they will be free for all to share (legally of course)
