So the time has come for me to grow up a bit (at least from a car point of view) so I'm looking for suggestions for a 4 door car/wagon (probably not an SUV as we already have one) with 300+HP and whilst my ideal car would be a BMW M5 the budget is probably <$30K for new or used.
    Any suggestions?

A car is the single worse thing you can spend money on. Find the cheapest most reliable car you can buy and run it into the ground.

Not much out there for a 300 hp with your price range. How bout a used Acura TLS. I had a 2003 with 265 hp. Very quick, reliable & you could probably get one for 23000 or so.

Then go for the super gas guzzler SUTs!

Sounds interesting I'll look into them.

Just go for the 325 hp Hummer H2..they have EZ monthly payments

    Benefits listed below:

"The H2 is a gas guzzler. Because it has a gross vehicle weight rating over 8500 lbs, the US government does not require it to meet federal fuel efficiency regulations. Hummer isn't even required to publish its fuel economy (owners indicate that they get around 10 mpg for normal use).

The H2 is a polluter. Based on G.M.'s optimistic claim that it gets13 mpg, an H2 will produce 3.4 metric tons of carbon emissions in a typical year, nearly double that of G.M.'s Chevrolet Malibu sedan.

The H2 is a death machine. You'd better hope that you don't collide with an H2 in your economy car. You can kiss your *** goodbye thanks to the H2's massive weight and raised bumpers. Too bad you couldn't afford an urban assault vehicle of your own. Or could you...?

The H2 is a tax loophole. Under the President's new tax plan, business owners can deduct the entire cost of their $55,000 H2. If you are in the highest tax bracket, that's a tax savings of nearly $20,000! The government rewards you more savings for buying an H2 than you'd get for buying an electric car. "

My avatar says it all. Not 300hp, but will give most 300hp cars a good scare ;-) By the way Chick-Dance - it's not AFLAC's limo, but it's roomier than it looks (since you mentioned minis, I just had to jump in here with a real one).

I think the criteria of 300hp and <30K is going to be nearly impossible unless you're talking used.

Maybe you need to approach this differently. You said it's time to grow up, and yet you already have an SUV. That vehicle seems to be the right choice for a family hauler (minivans aside - that's my ****-hauler of choice). Are you sure you're not really looking for something for yourself? (And there's nothing wrong with that - I'm in that very position. I've been driving a minivan for 6+ years now, and I'm looking for a much smaller yet crapload of fun car, like a Sentra SE-R spec V or a Mazda3.)

Used is fine and probably the only way I'll get the kind of car I'm looking for.
You're right that this won't be the main family car but it's time to trade my 2 door 200HP convertible for something with 4 door so I can put the kid(s) in it without too much hassle when I need to (the extra 100HP should make up for having to put up with a real roof ).

Check the C32 out. 2002 model is going to be your best bet.

Or you could try a car I had for awhile. 2001 740i Sport. This car is much faster than the 275 h.p. would lead you to believe. The car comes with voice activaited dialing and navagation. The large nav svreen in the car can also act as a tv. I have the module to do this if you are interested. I would really take a hard look at this car. I had this car for 42,000miles and did not have one major problem, only small things like headlight washer nozzle.

How many kids, and what age? I.E., since you're giving up the convertible, I'm assuming they're getting too big (or there are too many of them - I have 4) to fit in the already-comprimised back seats of a ragtop.

Here's a thought - when I was in the Nissan dealership, there was an Altima SE-R. They just came out with it; 260hp 3.5L with a 6-speed. Starts at $29,300, and Altimas are REALLY comfortable. I rented one on a business trip, and it was the best rental I've ever had, even as a base model with an automatic. Any farther north of this kind of car and you're in a BMW 3-series or a Merc C-class - and just over 30K. But, you could trade in the ragtop and get further up the ladder...

ExPat what did you think of the cars I posted for you?
  18.    #18
They look good, I like the C32 but I suspect it's going to be too expensive, I'd not thought of it or the 740i, in fact very few of these cars had occured to me which is why I thought I'd start this thread.
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions.

Understood; been there. Good luck with that, BTW.

    That 740i looks delicious...

I listed both of these cars because they are 30,000 or less. If you like the style of these I can probaly dig you up a few other examples in the style. The 740i is a fantastic car priced at 29,995 here is the linky . The 740i is a techno geek,s car ( Intergrated Valentine1 radar , Intergrated Mobile media player ,FrodoPlayer , OEM Bluetooth upgrade that you can activate, control volume, voice dial, and redial via the steering wheel ,these are just a few of the add ons for this car. So, it should suit you quite well, since you have a Treo, it did me . Just to clarify the 740i in the pictures is not the car for the link at the end, I provided the link in this post(the car is Silver and mean). Also these cars are not mine nor am I involved with any of them. I think the C32 is going for 30,500.
