I think you are mistaken Advance. I think you are thinking of the S-Type. The XJR is a totally different animal. V8 supercharged 375 h.p. for one, different car all together. You could not pay me to drive an S-Type.

    Any suggestions?
Well it looks like you have similar tastes as me. I have a 2002 E39 M5 and love it. Still brings a smile to my face every time I fire it up. If you can stretch your budget a bit you may be able to find a 2000 in the high 30's.

For under $30k I would get a Subaru WRX Sti or Mitsubishi EVO. While a bit on the small side both have four doors and offer the best performance for the money. For something a little more sedate how about a used Audi S4 wagon.

I just got a 2005 Acura TL. It was a tad over 30k (without MN sales tax, license...).

Only 275 HP, but WOW! It really flies!

Thanks for all the advice, I'm now seriously looking at the C32

You're right that this won't be the main family car but it's time to trade my 2 door 200HP convertible for something with 4 door so I can put the kid(s) in it without too much hassle when I need to (the extra 100HP should make up for having to put up with a real roof ).
Look at a used Maxima, preferably before the current model. The Maxima is fast, roomy, reliable and as oodles of options. I've owned three Nissans and ran them all comfortably right up to 200K. Good value for the money. I'd suggest a fully loaded SE (better suspension package than the LE).

Not to hijack the thread, but I'm in the market too. (Expat - hopefully you'll settle on something that fulfills your new needs; the C32 sounds ideal.) But I need to stay around 20K and I'd really like something new.

I'm looking at the Sentra SE-R Spec V and the Mazda3 SP23. The Civic Si is a close third, but I really need 4 doors (and I also really like the hatchback form, though the Spec V is cool enough for me to get over it).

[EDIT: I just realized I have already said the preceding on a previous page. I must be getting old and forgetful. Sorry...]

Anyone else out there riding one of these and loving it?

Nope, I had a 240sx, a Pathfinder, and a pick-em-up (like a pick-up, but smaller and cuter). I have driven a lot of Sentras (I sold new/used Nissans for two years. In fact the last car I sold was a 350Z - the first at the dealership I worked at). Back to cabinet making now.
The Sentra is a nice car. More aggressive and stiffer than the Mazda or the Honda. I sold a handful of SE-Rs, I don't think you could go wrong choosing it. Post a picture when you do.

Indeed, and the only car in the roundup that actually has more torque than HP; that 2.5 must have a big pair underneath.

Maybe you can give me an idea on this: Why does Nissan push certain option combos which preclude other options? For example, on the Spec V I'd love to get the Rockford stereo, and to get it requires the ABS package; not a bad thing, but it precludes me from getting the better Brembo brake package. Is that a manufacturing requirement, or do they just do it that way?

I think we are getting away from what ex-pat really wanted. Remember he wanted 300hp + four doors, not econo boxes.

Annoying but true fact. It costs less for them to pre-package options, meaning it costs less for you to get certain options, but it precludes them from being more flexible at the plant. You either get the Rockford and ABS, or go for the Brembos. You could, get the first package and add the Brembos later, but it would probably be more expensive.

It's not a 300hp+ 4 door. Passats are just sooooo............................... common. I am little different I like uniqueness.

    $125,000 . 500 HP. 4 DOORS.

That is a little above the 30,000 he wanted to spend. Plus why would anyone buy a 125,000 VW? I think the stats on this VW is more like 420hp and $96,000. Kinda crazy money for a VDub. You could get 2005-6 BMW M5 for $85,000. Or you could get an Aston Martin Lagonda:

Very nice rare car for the price.
