OK, this is probably a bunch of bull, but I thought I would see what everyone else thinks. Maybe this is old, but I just heard about it recently.

Supposedly, if you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are home, you can just call someone on your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the other person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the phone on their end.

If you're naive enough to actually try this, your car will supposedly unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Also, distance is supposedly no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk!)

Sounds like a load of bull if you ask me, but I must admit I'm a sucker for wanting to try it. Somone please confirm my suspicion that this is a pile of baloney before I make a fool of myself in a parking lot somewhere.

If you drive a Jeep with a soft top it's really impossible to lock your keys in the car

It's baloney, all right. Remote lock devices for cars don't work on sound, they work on RF (radio frequency). Not onlly can the mic in a cell phone not pick up a radio frequency signal, the speaker in a cell phone can't reproduce it.

Now, then, if the remote works on the same frequency as a cell phone (doubtful), and you could figure out the security code for your car (difficult), then perhaps you could write a program for your Treo that would act like the remote switch.

Easier to keep a spare key in your purse, briefcase, shoe, or whatever. Or buy a car with on-star, and use your cell phone to call on-star and have them unlock it. Or use your cell phone to call a locksmith.

yeah, I heard that recently too...... No freekin way that's gonna work. A crappy cellphone speaker is gonna output some 45000 hertz radio signal from a car alarm remote? Riiiiiiiiight. Someone out there just wants ta see people make idiots of themselves.

Claire do you ever post anything useful?

No...why bother. When we have a linguist and scholar such as yourself posting here, the comments by others are mere ramblings

That makes sense, some modern cars have keycards which give you keyless access, just by having the card in jour pocket you can open the doors without having to unlock them.
