    Hey Woof

First i will say that i feel your pain. I have had to learn hard lessons before. It sucks and i do hope that it works out for you...

With that said... Sometimes we shoot ourselves in the foot and then blame everyone but ourselves. If you do end up having to "eat" the cost of the laptop you have to know that if he had never had it... it would have have been stolen from his car. He was not responsible with the laptop... but maybe you werent either when you lent it to him. I would never lend a 3000 dollar laptop to anyone except a family member (and they would have to have a DAMN good reason for needing it). And even then i would do it knowing and accepting the fact that it may not come back in one piece... if it even comes back at all.

Hopefully you have realized this already. Dont flame me.
I submitted this only to say..
LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES OR THEY REPEAT THEMSELVES.
And dont be too hard on yourself... life happens.

Now go out and kick his ***!!

    *laffs* just kidding of course.

Longrider, I think you are wrong.
Woof did a noble deed by lending him this laptop, more people should act this way.
The guy obviously didnt appreciate woof's renerosity and didnt take care of the laptop.
Let's not make this guy the standard for human behaviour, basically lets not all sink to his level..

    Toolkit

Rose colored glasses are always very attractive.
    The truth is...

You can not expect someone to value something that does not belong to them. They will never treat it with the same respect and responsibility as the owner.

I hate to generalize but i have seen it time and time again.
I think some people would appreciate the gesture but i believe they are few and far between.

Woof, I think some valid points have been made. If the 2k is worth it to you, then pursue it with a small claims action (it would be worth it to me...I dont have 2k sitting around to burn). It shouldnt cost you that much as far as filing the paperwork and it is usually resolved within 60 days. Also, the point of not going over it again with him should be followed. It would be hard to prove harrassment but you dont want to push it. However, I would not expect the judge to give you the full benefit of your bargain. It is not your fault that he left it in plain view of his car but at the same time, it doesnt sound like you two discussed what the implications would be if he 'lost' it (i.e. If I let you borrow this laptop, you are completely responsible for any loss or damage up to $3,000). If you did spell it out (and put it in writing) your position would be much stronger.

    Good Luck

    Helping someone move: Free
Giving a bum money: Free (well not technically but you know what i mean).
Giving someones car a jump: Free

Leding out my $3000 laptop: Priceless (oh... i meant to say probably never)

I believe he was and I agree that your post that prompted Woof's response was inflammatory to say the least. Perhaps that wasn't your intention (though your subsequent remarks seem to indicate it was)... I had the same reaction when I read it.

here you go, need I say more?:

"F^&%ing lawyers!! It was my laptop and I can prove it. Have receipts etc. The company can also prove that is was sold to me and never transfered to anyone else.

Thanks muziek for offering help to the piece of sh!t who was too stupid to put my computer in his trunk. Any other tidbits than you can offer that will help him avoid taking responsibility? I love how lawyers just ignore the moral and ethical aspects of a situation and strictly focus on how they can wiggle free of responsibility.

Note to group: Don't loan Muziek anything of value without a contract. If she losses it you'll be on your own."

What part of Muziek's post was an idea or suggestion to help me resolve the situation? She offered nothing that would strengthen my case IMO, but instead indicated how she would argue for the other guy. I didnt take that as helpful. I did how ever apologize to her for my outburst.

If you are so sensitive, maybe you should stay out of here. No one else had a problem because they understand how painful it can be to lose several thousand dollars with seemingly little hope for getting it back. Not to mention the fact that all you did was compalin. I asked for people's opinions on what they would do, not nasty remarks. So what if we have disagreed in the past. Grow up and move on.

Guess this would answer Chick's question B.

Ok, put yourself in the borrower's position. If I borrowed an expensive laptop, I would *make sure* that it was with me at all times, and/or that I had appropriate insurance to cover it completely in case of theft/damage/etc..

Offering $1000 and saying sorry that's all they gave me is BS... Nobody takes responsibility for their actions anymore.

Take this guy to court. You'll get something.
