That would make Bush's stories more interesting.

Good thing NBC's 60-Minutes is doing an expose on this story now, just as the Boston Globe is publishing their story on the same issue. After all of these years, some brand-new exciting information on the National Guard records must have just been uncovered by all of those unbiased reporters. Sigh.

Funny how those 60-Minutes people don't ask Kerry to release his military records, like Bush has done. Funny also how they have studiously ignored the Swift Boat testimonies. Who wants to dig up old dirt on a presidential candidate about stuff that happened 30 years ago, right? Oh wait, just dig up the dirt on the Republican.

Well, Heberman, both Bush and Kerry have released their medical records. It is under contention whether either of them have released all of their records. I am still at a loss as to which records Kerry has not released. I have dug through his site and looked at the medical records, and have seen 3 different purple heart records. If you know this to be true, which records are missing? I've asked this before and I still can't figure it out.

The swiftboats folks and their info has and still is being investigated. I've only heard of them being discredited so far (in the press with actual documents.) If a scandal is found and against Kerry, do you honestly believe the press would 'sit' on that info? I don't. They'd love the exclusive scoop. They never 'sat' on Clinton info - they rode that pony all the way to the glue factory! The more conservative press is investigating as well, I'm sure.

I agree, Tribal. There is very little liberal/conservative bias in the MAINSTREAM press, when compared to the sensationalist, sex, drugs, and lies, laziness, get-the-story-first biases that drive profits for media companies. Look at the last presidential election for evidence of this. Is anyone here actually going to try to argue that Gore was favored by the press?

There has been plenty of mainstream coverage of the Kerry/Swiftboat controversy. As should be expected, most of it ended with a question mark as to who is telling the truth. That's because the swift boaters were shown to have alterior motives, and a lot of their claims have been proven untrue. And, to be fair, Kerry didn't exactly convince the media beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was 100% in the right, either. So the investigation continues, and as soon as something new appears, you better believe the media will be all over it.

Lately, the mainstream press has been rather quiet about the comparable Bush Alabama controversy, but NEW EVIDENCE has come to light, in the form of documents which Bush and co. swore didn't exist, but have been forced into the open by a judge in a lawsuit against him. So, of course, 60 Min II is doing a piece on it. Bush claimed to have released all of his records, but didn't really. That's a story, and it only makes sense that they run with it.

There's no conspiracy here. And the dems are actually being quiet in response. Kerry is very wisely attacking Bush on the cost of the war and the state of the economy instead. Maybe adding those Clinton advisors to his team is finally starting to pay off.

Bayou Buzz. Now there's a well-respected, world reknowned publication. Who needs the New York Times when you can get all the facts from Louisiana?

I wonder if there are any papers out there with republican columnists who don't like Bush? I'm guessing there's at least one.

    So what's the point, Claire?

Right Myjoec. That is one man's opinion who seems to want to speak for democrats, but isn't their voice. Doesn't look like most dems know Kerry is the wrong guy. In fact, all evidence speaks otherwise (polls for example.)

Actually, they guy in the Louisiana buzz article misses the point. If you want to become president of the USA, you have to win the "middle", the majority of people who does not share the extreme neo-con or the extremely liberal views. Guess why Giuliani and Schwarzenegger figured so prominently at the RNC: For precisely the same reason - trying to win the middle.

The "extreme" democrats who e.g. want a strong anti-war statement will vote for Kerry anyway, there is no need to convince THEM that Bush is not an option. Kerry has to convice the people somewhere between the extremes that he is the better option, they are the people he is aiming at.

I didn't pick anyone. I'm an independent, remember? So I can't vote in primaries.

Fair enough. But that's why no ONE news story should ever be trusted as the be-all-and-end-all source of anything.

Especially not an opinion piece in a small, relatively unknown paper.

While we're at it...let's add CNN(that relatively unknown cable news channel) and Peter Arnett. BTW where is he now?

Maybe that's because Arnold is not the one running for President. You're going to take votes away from Bush because of what Schwarzenegger said?

I didn't see that speech, but I think he meant that the US was drawn into the war because of Pearl Harbor. I didn't take his statement to mean that Pearl Harbor started the war.

Nevertheless, it is of course true that Pearl Harbour had a very strong effect on the willingness of the US to participate in a more active form in WWII. The official US declaration of war was on December 8, 1941, about two years after WWII started.
Or one day after Pearl Harbor. I guess that's just a coincidence? This is such a stupid point to argue about. You're so eager to denounce Bush that you'll try to revise history just to prove him wrong.

I believe the exact quote was, "I took the initiative in creating the Internet." He did PROMOTE the internet while in Congress, but had NOTHING to do with it's creation. So it was a lie.

The study of history is based on interpretation, which is often confused with "revision." There is very little in the way of immutable data in the study of history -- even the names and dates that everyone agrees about, and upon which our interpretations are based, have been known to change. Are you ...shocked, procure?

Clulup actually had very interesting observations to offer about the United States involvement with World War Two. It's true, Bush probably meant that the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor was a signficant event to the United States, a strong catalyst for its declaring war with Japan and the beginning of a much more active role in the global conflict. On the other hand, to say that WWII started with Pearl Harbor is putting it kind of loosely.

Lies! ...Or perhaps Gore was also putting it kind of loosely. Generally, this kind of loose talk always gets the speaker into trouble. Bush, Quayle, Clinton, Gore, everybody -- all politicians eat it on this.

Wasn't there a thing a little while ago on this board where we generally agreed to lighten up? Heberman, you still feel like lightening up, man?
