Just got us a cocktail recipe book, of course it's a bit hard to judge which ones to go for first, especially as I don't have all the liqueurs and spirits. So which cocktails do you reckon I should go for first and therefore which spirits/liqueurs should I start my collection with. I normally only have vodka, metaxa and single malt scotch (but I'm not using that). Which should be the next two or three that I get? And what cocktails can you make with them?

Gah! Water is ok, but do you really prefer it to a nice alcoholic drink? I know you drink wine

Every fine home bar should have the following:

    Gin
    Vodka (Ultra Premium Unflavored)
    Whiskey - Scotch
    Whiskey - Bourbon
    Tequila (Anejo only)
    Grand Marnier
    Kahlua or Baileys
    Sweet Vermouth
    Dry Vermouth
    Amaretto
    Sugar
    Lemons
    Limes
    Water (still and sparkling)
    Fresh mint in season
    Olives
    Soda (cola)

With the above, you can pretty much satisfy all recipes and tastes.

Please add Tonic and Soda Water, Cognac, B&B, and Jack Black.

Because once you go Black you end up on your Back.

    And remember the old saying.....

    I don't have a drinking problem.
    I Drink.
    I Get Drunk.
    I Fall Down.
    No Problem.

^ I'd like to add a bottle of rum to that list. Though I'm all for a nice bottle of port or a good martini, I'm really just a simple rum & coke girl at heart

I think the first ones to get are rum and tequila. We have plenty of mint (applemint which is really for sauce and chocolate-peppermint for drinks ). Might have to get drambuie for Rusty Nails, which are a particular fetish of mine. Unfortunately the one recipe our book doesn't have is Rusty Nail. Anyone know it?

Rusty Nail - worst hangover in my drinking history!

If you get a really good Anejo Tequila - mix fresh squeezed lime juice (three limes), sugar, and a touch of spring water (to taste but not too sweet), add a jigger of Grand Marnier, a sprig or two of mint, and some shots (2-3) of the Anejo. Lots of ice in a shaker, shake well, and then into the glass (with more ice and salt on the rim). Fresh made pico de gallo and some tortilla chips! I just got back from a vacation on the Mexican Pacific coast at Las Alamandas (www.lasalamandas.com) and that's all we drank for 10 days. Ah to go back...

Bailey's, so you can have a glass of Bailey's. Draumbuie, so you can have a glass of Drambuie, or maybe a nice cuppa tea. And Grey Goose and apple pucker for those very expensive appletinis.

Oh, and stay away from things like Everclear, although I have a whole bottle of Hand Grenade mix waiting for a place to happen.

A large glass jar with a spout on the bottom filled with layers of fruit (different kinds of berries in one jar, melons, grapes, pineapple in another, you get the idea) and Finlandia vodka. Marinated for several days. Great for summer parties.

Absolute Vodka....in a freezer for a day or two. Poured into a crystal glass which has laid beside the vodka in the freezer....it's really thick and when you pour it, it goes..glub........glub......when you taste it....s....mmmmmmmmooooooooothhhhhhh. LOL

Hehe, I'm having a party tonight to celebrate a summer of good work by our interns. My supervisor is treating us to Capital Grill, then we're heading back to my studio for many, many drinks. The interns are college-aged, so I had to make a bunch of jello shots...but there's more to be had! Personally, the only hard alcohol I really enjoy is Raki, a turkish beverage that is exquisite (http://www.turkeytravelplanner.com/T...Food/Raki.html)

But beer...oh man, I can always go for a good Newcastle or a Pilsner Urquell. My favorite brewery is Unibroue, hands down. Man...to think that I was straightedge until only last september. How the mighty have fallen

    Love that name!
My neighbour told me they used to call Gin and tonic "le G'opner" thought that was a very clever one too
