I decided I need a SD card reader since my HP Photosmart printers always break down and I can't use the slots on it anymore anyway. (Figured might as well get a writer too) and was wondering what are your thoughts and suggestions if you own one?

I've looked at so many models between stores and Ebay today that I don't know the difference anymore. Could someone give me the 411 on selecting a Reader.

I want to use it to transfer pics without the hassle of plugging up my digi cam or doing a hot sync. I also need one that has both SD and Compact Flash slots using Windows XP.

    Thanks for the help.

These have pretty much become commodity items. There are many multiple-format readers (and they all should have write capabilties as well) out there. Just yesterday, I was in my local Wal-Mart and they had 3 or 4 different models ranging from $20-$40 IIRC. All had USB interfaces and likely will work with XP.

I ended up getting one "free" from my neighborhood 'Radio Shack' guy, went in to purchase one and he gave me his since he doesn't use it. (Hum... I still owe him lunch or a Lattee)

Question, I noticed that my 256mb card works fine in it but when I plugged in my daughter's 16mb card in it, it didn't read it. (this size was all she needed for her Jam Cam digital camera). Are these readers only supposed to read cards of certain sizes?

    Thanks

Yes, they should be able to read ANY size. The problem is likely with the format. The Jam Cam may be using some proprietary format that isn't recognized. I have a Kodak digital camera that won't recognize a CF card freshly formatted on my PC's card reader. It want's its own file and directory structure in place, or else it says the card isn't properly formatted.
