Dry humor is a British thing, is it not? But hey, in the Olympics the Brits are better swimmers than I have given the credit for

Although I think that without hearing the tone of my voice you might think I'm a bit 'dry'.
I was NOT around for all of the give and take between PeterBrown, Murrayalex and others so I will not take sides. I will say however that based on what I read, PeterBrown was a much better sport then I would have been had our roles, or countries of origin, been reversed. My Hat off to him for his good nature, and humor, and reserve. IMHO all three were tested.

Murryalex has a razor sharp wit and a tongue to match. It took me a bit to understand that and I must admit I bristled a bit when first I came across him on these forums. But once I understood his wit and the fact that he is willing to cut himself as well as others, I realized that I was logging on hoping he had something to say today. Something to make me think, to smile, to shake my head and say, "go get'em Murrryalex".

oops, I think you were just busting them a bit when you say they chased people off. I hope so anyway. First I don't think Alli get's chased off by very many people. I am guessing she can hold her own in just about any situation. Except lime jello wrestling where it's obvioius she would be creamed. She is very busy all over this forum and I would guess, and it's just a guess, that this thread is not as amusing for her as it is for others....Like Me!

Claire is a wonderful breath of fresh air when she comes here and I hope we see her again. If she has left because she feels people gave her a hard time she might read her own posts to see if her humor wasn't a little hard hitting in return. I know at one point in this thread I bailed just because it seemed like people were getting angry. I don't think that's the point of this thread. There are enough of those threads already. I hope she comes back.

As a friend of mine's Mother used to say, "Play nice, don't fight" <<if you want to say it accurately you have to say it with a New Yorker Jewish accent. I used to ask her to say just so I could hear her.

ACD, thanks for the post and clarifications. And I am glad, for once, that there are no virgins to free and villages to burn. So I hope you are taking-five and waxing your wings.
A pretty bird has whispered into my ear that of all the towns in the world, only Boulder, CO, has had 3 different people win 3 different medals! Wow

OK, I can't help it getting my 2-cent worth into this Claire/Alli issue. I agree with ACD 99%. Alli is too busy with other stuff and Claire has some growing-up to do. I like Claire's humor (I have been reading the "Word Association" thread), and I like her breath of fresh-air as well. But she needs to develop a thicker skin and "fight" back with wit. She can do if she'd stop being SO stubborn about trying.
As Chick has mentioned here, we are a family. Not a perfect family but a fun one, nevertheless. I have learned new things about people on this thread and it is nice. I come back to this thread because it is fun and charming. Blah.......Nuff

Congratulations! Switzerland won another one, too, but as mentioned before, these will not be our Olympics.

Actually, when looking at the medal tracker, it becomes obvious that the European Union should pool their medals. In this case, it would be EU 85 vs. USA 35 presently - not counting the two Swiss medals, but the two Danish ones of course ! What's going on, why are the US such a lame bunch when compared to Europe??

I'm up early tomorrow (well, for a saturday) to watch the men's coxless four in rowing. Britain has won gold at this event for the last five Olympics (with Steve Redgrave getting a record five golds in separate Olympics in a row), and it looks like being six! Now that's a record to be proud of
We got our first gold yesterday in the Yngling Class in sailing! (?) Apparently it's a Danish word, now who might know about that? :?

Since the danish crown prince married an aussie girl. I guess it will become an aussie word soon too

ToolkiT, as a neutral observer in the land down under: why are the Australians so bloody good at the Olympics? They are basically of British descent, but the Brits have about 7 medals so far, and the Aussies 20, despite the fact that there are only 20 million Australians vs. 60 million British? Was it a process of natural selection, that only the toughest British survived the journey to Australia? Is it the climate? I mean, it is never really summer in the UK, so small wonder they can't compete with Australia in the Summer Olympics? Any ideas?

Aussies are of a very mixed background nowadays.. lots of medateranian and asian people out here.
To make a very big generalisation, Australia has allways been a tough country, and lots of people doing hard physical labour.
Sport is very important over here (maybe even more than in the US).
And the climate surely helps too, add to that national pride and you havea recepy for a winner I guess..
Size doesnt allways matter, look at holland, a mere speck on the map, yet relatively quite some medals...

I mentioned tipping because we can't afford to lose another woman on this thread. I am sure you are aware that the Brits have chased Claire and Alli away from here with their charm
more likely you frightened her off with your unremmiting and nauseating slobbering...

We have won some medals that don't show up on the tally yet - because the events haven't finished. The Yngling gold is a case in point, the women have won gold with a race to spare. However, I do have to admit that the Aussies are really quite good at this sort of stuff, I think it's because participatory sport is such an important part of the Aussie way of life whereas for us Brits we're just into spectator sport.

In may opinion this has to be the ultimate in sacrifice for an athelete to qualify to join this team. My God how bad do you want to win for your country that you would let someone....hold on...my wife is whispering something urgently in my ear.....>>>speaking to wife "uh, huh, what? oh, you mean that means they don't have a Coxswain! oh, I thought it meant they didn't have a....ow! don't hit! The point about spectators & UK sounds v. plausible - maybe the reason we're doing well in the sailing is its much better to participate than watch.
Hopefully we'll get a few more golds in the next couple of days. Ben Ainslie is guaranteed at least silver in his sailing class, the coxless fours have got to beat Canada - that might be quite tough, and Italy are pretty sharp too.

I'm rooting for Iraq in the Football as well!

Clu, keep in mind that the Aussies are excellent swimmers. The US has some mighty athletes in team-sports and they are still competing. Also track & field will start soon and the US should win plenty of medals there.
