Except France "France, invoking internal security reasons, has decided to use the safeguard clause of the Treaty, allowing the temporary continuation of passport controls on its borders with Belgium and Luxembourg. The French government announced in April that it would be lifting controls at its borders with Germany and Spain. Nevertheless, its neighbours' police forces do have a right of pursuit on to French territory, as designed by the Treaty."

The US constitution engulfs every state of the Union; it isn't just culture and language (which are HUGE things, by the way). The US has one flag as well (and I wouldn't overlook it). Now if a Pole wants to move to Spain what shared-values does he have with an average Spaniard? What history do they share? What flag do they have in common?
Sorry but to me the EU, and especially the Euro idea, is for Europe to find a way to remain and compete even-footed with the US.
I agree with you that the US is a more tight union than the EU, but the EU is a union none the less.
They have there own flag too FYI..

People can pack and move into another EU country too..
EU law engulfs all EU countries too...

See it is not that different..

And you dont need to show ID when you board a plane in the US??
I think security rules are more restricting in the US than in the EU at the moment..

I never argued it isnt different, just not as different as you make it out to me.
Keep in mind that the US has been a union for say 200 years? The UN only a few..

The EU in a union in the beginning phase, but a real union none the less.

True but they can pull you over and check you out anyway...
In the case of france-spain they just choose to do it at the borders since there is allready infrastructure there and there is limited travel options.

Besides that, it is an exeption to the rule..
I can drive from my parents in Holland to france, go over to Austria, drive back to my parents and not stop once for customs but crossing 5 borders..

No...I guess I cant explain this right. Maybe Chick can better but the EU by being composed of different countries all have their own national prestige, national agendas and they will always be more inportant then the EU

It is different indeed the US gov has way more power as the EU gov (as said before)
And some decisions are only made on country level.
But simular things happen in the US, some things are handles per state basis and some on national basis. In the US more things are handles on national basis than on EU basis in the EU.

so in conclusion it is different, but simular..
