Buying a tablet online? Beware of fakes, warns research report | TabTimes

Call it "The TouchPad effect.” When Hewlett-Packard decided to discontinue its highly-touted TouchPad tablet earlier this year, buyers scrambled to scarf up the remaining inventory being offered at a blow-out $99 price. If HP didn’t start the low-priced tablet trend, it sure exposed the pent up demand.

While few manufacturers can afford to match the TouchPad’s closeout $99 price (HP reportedly lost over $200 on every $99 unit sold), few are still trying to match Apple’s baseline $499 for the iPad. Amazon, for example, was widely expected to bring out its Kindle Fire for $249, but surprised with a $199.99 price at last month’s unveiling.
