    Hi all,

I know this is a cellphone forum, but I also know that many of us have had experience with failing hard drives.

Our laptop (Gateway running Vista) is making a sound which is apparently caused by bad bearings. It's only been making it since yesterday, and only when booting/coming out of hibernation.

I was hoping someone could give me a guess as to how long we might have before it stops working all together.

    Thank you!

Soon, most likely. Hard drives making horrible sounds is always a sign of mechanical failure. I'd try to make a backup of the drive ASAP.

I would suggest purchasing an external HD (they are inexpensive now) and use it back up your files regularly. I have one on my computer for this purpose after losing nearly everything once to an HD failure. Definitely worth the few bucks.

You should keep one backup of your important files at home and another off-site.
