OK, I have a rant. This isn't exactly geeky, but it's related to MSN.

I have a hotmail account. I've had the same email address for over 10 years now and I'm reluctant to change it simply because I've had it for so long, even though MSN has ticked me off before now. I signed up for the $20/year subscription a long time ago so I'd have more storage space and they wouldn't delete old emails. Recently I got an email saying it was time to renew my subscription, but I ignored it since I have a cc on file with them. I got another email saying that my cc had expired...I checked my account and realized my friend's card was still on my account from when I'd had to borrow it 2 yrs ago. (That's another frustrating story that I don't feel like going into.) I tried changing the cc information over to my debit card, but it wouldn't authorize it for some reason.

I called my bank first, thinking it had something to do with where I'd had to file a dispute against MSN 2 yrs ago since they had double-charged me. My bank said they weren't declining the transaction and that I should call MSN. So I call MSN and they said the bank wouldn't authorize the transaction and I should call them! I called my bank back AGAIN and they told me again that they aren't declining the transactions - they can give me time and date stamps of where they're not declining it. I called MSN AGAIN and they tell me that they can see that my card is good, but for some reason they have to push a 'trial' transaction in the amount of $0 through first to make sure it's good. The bank won't approve a transaction of $0, but MSN says they have to or the system won't push through the REAL transaction.

I call my bank back for a 3rd time and ask the person there if they can possibly call MSN for me and explain to them that I have $ in my account and to push the friggen transaction through?!!? They can't do that and the system won't authorize a transaction of $0 - it has to have at least $1 on it. It's all behind the scenes crap that NO ONE seems to know how to make work!!!!

It's friggen TWENTY DOLLARS. I was so PO'd by then, I didn't call MSN back again...this was on Thursday. I still haven't renewed my subscription, even though my friend whose credit card I'd previously used said I could use it again. It's the whole POINT of the thing now. I'm so ticked off! I hate to change my standard email address after all this time, but MSN is pretty much leaving me no choice. They can't seem to figure out how to charge my card! ARGH!!!!

Wow... that's gotta be frustrating! I set companies up with processing services and all companies know that there is no such thing as a $0 transaction. All transactions must be at least $0.01 for the transaction to actually process through ANY system (no matter what bank it is). I've never heard of a company trying to authorize a $0 transaction... it wouldn't even hit the network for that amount as the system would automatically cancel out the approval process for that amount. Dumb.

OMG - I was just back in my MSN settings. (One correction - this series of phone calls happened on Tuesday 11/9, not Thursday 11/11.) I decided to give it one more shot and see if I could get my card to be the one charged. Surprisingly enough, the system DID accept it as the new payment method...but it said my balance was $0?!?! As in it had already been paid! I checked the history on there for my friend's card and it looks like they somehow got a card that was VERY expired (3/10) to accept the transaction on the 10th! So I think I now owe my friend $20...which is no big deal since I see him all the time anyhow, but it's AGAIN the point of the thing! They couldn't change the payment method to my card until the balance was at $0?!?! At least that's the way it looks...

PS - I'm thinking of changing over to google email permanently. Anyone had any experience with their services? I assume they have a 'paid' version where you get lots of space and can save old stuff...

I just hate having to change my email on everything.

Gmail gives you so much free space, you may not need more. I've been using them since they launched and never have. I've got over a thousand emails in there.

Gmail user since closed beta and no issues. I never delete any emails and still have a ton of free space. I think they are up to 7 gigs of storage. Also they never go in and erase old emails. Heck i use it to store programs that i need to pull back up fast and on the go

Using gmail for a couple of different accounts here since the beta days and have never come close to using up all the space (plus they give you the ability to archive). We also use the new gmail enterprise service for our company. You can't beat its synergy with webOS.

Ah, the beta days, when you had to send someone else an invite or they couldn't join and people were begging for them!

I offered my friend some special treatment for an invite code and he gave it to me so that way I would stop offering that to him

reddit seriously upgrade your servers... you are a popular site and you know you are a popular site yet you still have more down time than twitter with a fraction of the user base. I love you reddit but seriously sometimes you make me question our relationship

I hate best buy cause of their return policy. It's 15 dayz and 10% restocking fee. They messed up my friends laptop....charged him like $$$ to make restore discs O.o

I hate HP. My dad bought a desktop pc for like $1000. A few years ago. It came with a dvd burner.a few weeks after we got it it broke. So the hp guy came out and put ina new one. But when ever I tried to burn dvds it would never work...i tried every software....

I hate yahoo. When I first got my pre I couldn't get my yahoo email accnt to link to my pre. I needed all the server settings. I emailed yahoo and they told me that if I wanted that info I had to get a paid accnt($20 a month). I finally got my answer by asking here on PC. But what if someone wants to use thunderbird?

I love gmail. They have all the features a real email service should have. And I can call any phone in the U.S.A. For free right from my inbox...

    NOT "HP webOS"!!!
