I figure this would be a Fun thread..

    How it works .. (Rules)

We start off with a topic and everyone who posts will "speak" honestly of their opinion on said topic.

The first poster at the beginning of everyday (midnight is the beginning) MUST choose a new topic, (whether or not the previous topic has been finished or not). You can not continue the previous topic.

Additionally, at the end of every week , if you would like go back to a previous topic you can, (with the exception of the last topic spoken).

The Topic can be of anything, whether serious in nature or not. try NOT to digress.

    I will start.

What do you feel the state of the education system in america currently?? and what would you do to change it?

    It's in bad shape.

Fixing it is a complex process. One comment I can make is that the public system seems to have a strange funding model compared to what I'm used to in Canada.

It seems that school districts with wealthier tax payers have more money per student then school districts with poor tax payers.

In Canada education funding is controlled provincially and is equally distributed to public schools/districts. The idea being that poor children will get as good of an education as the rich kids. Additionally teachers are also paid equally (at a provincial level) regardless of what school they are teaching in.

Bottom line...Equalize the wealth and give the poor kids the same opportunity the rich kids are getting. It will improve society.

Likely much to socialistic of a nothing for this crowd.

Start by destroying any and all teachers unions.

why would that help?? my cousin is a kindergarten teacher and recently had her class pulled from her class to teach special needs children... she has no special training... so they are hiring someone to assist her who is still training for her certificate in special needs.. this is not legal what they are doing...

she spoke to her union rep to try and collapse the class until someone qualified to handle it could take over

It's not socialism to distribute school funding on a per-student basis. My guess is that they all have the same electric bill and the teacher salary is the same.

I'm not for redistribution of wealth, but I do wonder how school funding gets allocated. It would seem that it should be based on costs to achieve a common education level for those expenses that can be compared.

But what happens when its not just the teachers or the material studied as much as it is the lazy punk kids who would rather do drugs and commit other crimes than get an education and get out of a bad situation? It is not my responsibility as a tax payer to take care of someones child when they cant or wont take care of their personal responsibilities. It is their job to get an education......if you dont get what youre studying then go to the library, go to an uncle an aunt a friend a teacher or someone who can help and FRIGGIN EMPOWER YOURSELF!
This is a hot button issue, everything I know is because I pushed myself hard thru it all and I no one else......I did it.
Im an electrician, Im a lineman, Im almost a blackbelt in my training because I push hard 5 days a week. Im a top employee at work because I go faster and harder than the others around me.
So dont give me the crap that it is everyones job because its not.........its yours and yours alone........get an education and be responsible for yourself!

Edit* and dont give me the location bs either, you can read a dang book under a tree!

Personally I think these should be sent to the army. A few years of that environment and they will have education and discipline, and do something good for their country.

American educational system is deplorable compared to the rest of other industrialized nations. The dropout rate amongst minorities is extremely high, inner City schools are riddled with gangs, and overall, public schools are poorly funded. There are many approaches that could be taken to alleviate the continued stagnation of our educational system but firstly, I think the Department of Education needs to be dissolved. Quite frankly, I do not see it as a necessity. The funds spent within this department should be dispersed to states to be used in overhauling their educational system. I went to school in three different countries and can conclusively say that I rank the US educational system the least good (See!)

Still missing the point..........look all the info is there, it is not a lack of materials to study it is the individuals lack of drive.... and that starts at home with good ole mom and dad......but w.t.h. happens if dad is an uneducated convict that gets in trouble all the time and mom is well............whatever she is? The child has no example and by the time he or she is old enough to know the difference between right and wrong they dont give a damn and would rather take what they think is the easy road.

I think another big part of the problem is that schools are PASSING students that should be FAILING, just so the school's teachers and admins don't look bad.

It's not only on a school-by-school basis, it's whole systems.

THAT's an outrage, in and of itself.

Because I didn't realize I was a jerk until I had a wife to point that out to me (did I say that out loud? )

It's been MANY years since then. Having a family really woke me up to the realities of life. Boot camp and gunfire would have done it sooner, but I wasn't smart enough to realize any of that.

I can kind of see how this can be mistaken for off topic but this is the problem............. the whole what is wrong with the education system question is a mis direction, therefore off topic in itself........again the real issue here is the lack of resposibility for our own education and actions.

We learn to meet responsibilities by failing once or twice and then facing the consequences..... but then, that might damage our kid's self-esteem.
