I mean dead as far as actual quality (again I mean in mainstream hip hop), not popularity/profitablity.

That wouldnt be much of a real statement because the quality would be different for every single person and cant be defined

mysogeny and violence make up some of the best artwork in any medium from any time period. please dont belittle an entire genre of music because you find it unsettling. art reflects life. granted plenty rap music is trash, subject matter alone isnt enough to discredit every peice. just sayin'

i'll leave you with a fitting verse from jay-z, a response to critics who simply input w/o understanding

you say that I'm foolish - I only talk about jewels.
Do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it?
See, I'm influenced by the ghetto you ruined.

I bring it through the ghetto without ridin 'round
hidin down duckin strays from frustrated youths stuck in they ways
Just read a magazine that f*ed up my day
How can you rate music that thugs with nothin relate to it?

    Popularity/Profitability doesn't mean quality?

How does one signify quality to YOU ?

I believe Eminem crushing the charts is a nice sign of it, to me @ least.

Although I do have to agree with johnnypre, there can be great songs that never make the top 40 because they just arent advertised, for example lots of my friends have only head "not afraid" and "love the way you lie" from recovery, I like eminem so I bought the cd and listened to every song and im gonna be honest those two songs are close to the bottom of my favorites from that cd

    Immortal Technique hands down!!!

He is undergrounf and not corrupt like Wayne and Gucci and all of those other GAEBAGE rappers.

Cage/Chris Palko is also really legit but not his latest album. Back when he was on PCP and in Stony Lodge Mental Institute he made his best albums.
