First of all, I'm only moderately web and software tech savvy. I can read a manual if I have to but I don't write code so I want to keep this fairly simple. I'd like to create a site for mostly friends and family to post and or share pictures. I'd like some form of security/login software to control who's getting into at least certain parts of the site. I'd like for some of the site to be public access for the weather data that I plan to feed to the site. I have a Davis Weather Station in service now with a Davis WeatherLink soon to go online. I realize that the hosting server is going to be driven by the amount of data stored and or transferred but I would like a dependable host that's reasonable. I would like to have one or two weather cams and or security cam feeds to also be delivered to the site. Maybe user controllable cameras in the future.

Most importantly, I'd like to be able to access and or control the site with smartphones such as PalmPre using WebOS. I know that I might have to build it with my desktop but I'd like to be able to add pictures and files with the Pre.
I need advice on who provides domain names, and hosting services at a decent price. I know that there's GoDaddy and JustHost but what makes one company really better than another? Do I need my own standalone computer to act as a server or for little amounts of data transfer can I just use all web-based hosts? Sorry for the scattered questions but I'm looking for advice and opinions; nut just a google search.
    Thanks for any help.

First, you need to visit: Web Hosting Talk - The largest, most influential web hosting community on the Internet I've been a member there for 7 to or 8 years.

Second, do you want to build this or have someone else build it?
Elance | Outsource to freelancers, professionals, experts, and consultants - Get work done on Elance. is a good place to get the job done for a small fee. It should cost under $1000 for something like you are asking... might be a boiler, but at least it will get you going. You can always change the look with css master pages.

If you want a domain name, look no further than Godaddy Girls Rock You, Punk! or Web Hosting Services and Domain Name Registration : 1&1 Internet Inc. . I have several domains with both companies... nothing special about either... outside of good prices and not having to worry about your domains. You might find a cheaper price someplace else, but godaaddy and 1and1 will be around for the long haul. And yes, I've seen a register shut down.

Anyway, hosting you can go with Fluid Hosting: FreeBSD and Windows Hosting . I've been with them for maybe 6 years. They are that good...

I like to keep my hosting and domains separate... plus, 1and1 and godaddy offer hosting, but they have "gotchas" unlike players like fluid hosting.

I've been using Mecca Hosting - Fast. Reliable. Secure. for about 5 years and have had no problems. They handle all of my site needs very well and site builder is very easy to use.

They have an odd way of selling their services... Web Hosting Services - $2.95/Month

Instead of listing the amount of space or bandwidth offered, they explain how many visitors, images and pages allowed. Not wrong or right, just different...

True it is different, but for someone like me being new with the whole concept yet not wanting to continue paying someone $100/mo, it made it easier to understand than bandwidth and such. I now pay about $10/mo. for domain, email and website for our brick and mortar business. It is very easy and not time consuming for me to update with the online site builder even when not at home. 5 yrs no probs. I think they are great for newbies. I have also thought of setting up family only pages...will prob. some day

5 years.... that is why I was careful in the way I worded it... it is HARD to find a hosting company that you like... I went through over 10 before landing at my current hosting company.

I can see how the wording would be better for new people... and for people like me, to be honest, the answer to my questions is only an email away... or maybe even a faq away (I did not look hard).

I have a lot of sites with fh... but shared hosting has been good to me... no need to waste resources with virtual or a server. I know a couple of people who do... but they do different types of business.

Thanks so far for your answers. I'm looking at several of the hosting services now and most seem to be what I'm looking for right now. I think that I'll start off with some of the software provided with the weather station and supplement with web design templates from whomever web host that I select. I joined the Web Hosting Talk forums and that"s helping me learn what to look for in a web design. I guess I need to know size of my storage (weather data, weathercam images, etc.) so that I know what type of plan to choose. It's going to take some creative guessing to see the future or else a host which will upgrade at a reasonable rate! I know it may be a little "boilerplate" at the beginning but I can touch it up as I go. I'd like the idea of a professional helping out but realistically this is just a simple little weather page idea which isn't a money-making venture I also see that the secure signin could be done through a link to a different page in order to keep the main design easier to produce. Keeping this Pre-friendly is also an important part of the design. Thanks again so far for the advice.

    A) Hire a professional to develop your website. Best approach for your given requirements would be an off the shelf php photo sharing app which the developer would hammer into fitting your requirements.

    B) GoDaddy is fine, pay no more. Make sure YOU obtain your domain name. If you obtain it through a hosting company many non-reputables will keep it if you try to go elsewhere.

    C) Whatever hosting you choose, make sure you can EASILY backup your ENTIRE website; files, images, database, emails, EVERYTHING and download backups OFTEN. You don't know how many people I've talked to that have had their sites go 'poof' and the hosting company says "sorry".
