Just noticed a new option under settings.. calls...

    Caller ID (out):
When I SMS a Google Voice number from one of my forwarding phones:
option 1: Don't change anything (default)
option 2: Display my Google Voice number
Note: this setting currently only applies to SMS; calls will be included soon.

Seems like a cool feature if others have google voice as well.

I have a couple of gv accounts.... I don't use them.

Sure I have some invites to give out. lol

This is a cool feature... slowly google is building several key features into gv.

I wonder if the carriers are going to start coming together to fight GV or if they will start looking at ways to reduce or eliminate connection fees...

They are already doing both... already complaints that google is a phone company and not subject to fees and regulations... forget who brought that on... maybe att...

The only issue is that you need a cell connection to make gv work well. Of course, you could connect through gizmo5 onto your computer (basically VOIP). . Well, not for long since google purchased Gizmo5. I used gizmo back when gv was called grand central....

Google needs to buy a cell phone company. Maybe sprint. lol

On a serious note, I'm not sure how many people want to revert back to two numbers. I like to keep my cell phone number... I don't need a gv number and cell phone number. Guess the idea would be to give up my cell number. Naw... I'd rather not. I'd expect google to have an outage before sprint.

This feature isn't new. They were actually already showing your Google Voice number when you connected to another Google Voice user. It was the default setting. They actually just added that option to "re-enable" that functionality since I guess someone complained.

It really annoys me that they made it opt-in. Showing your Google Voice number should be the default option. The whole point of the number is to be one number for everything.

Actually, it works for people who sms... if you think about it... now the sms can go to their cell phone number, instead of gv.

Yeah except that for all intents and purposes a text going to your GV also goes to your mobile as well. The only difference is for someone with multiple cell phones which isn't really that many people.

Also, I don't really think that's what's being addressed here anyway. Correct me if I'm wrong but all this does is instead of the second party seeing your GV number they will see a 406 number just like you were a regular number texting their GV and not another GV user. When they reply it will still go to your GV account and not a specific phone.

I think it's a great option for those who need it, but the reasonable default should definitely be for your Google Voice number to show up when sending SMSs.
