To all my fellow companions, may this jouney through this discussion not bring any strife, hardships or greef. What is an American it's something we all know, if your not, you are, we are & trying to become better & to help others do the same, even if others may have to go through sections in their lives that America has already passed. Ah, the sound of Politics, Religion & Freedom.
True this is something we all have & are trying again, to be together so many years after trying to build that tower to God.
The hardships should be looked at in happiness since the hardships always bring that great smile when all the pain is gone.
May this Part try in a civil way show the goodness we have & are reaching for after having learned our mistakes.
I have not left & am happy to be here, begining Part 2 so we may all speak together. I am an American & I am happy.

I have often thought that use of the term "American" is miss-used, or at least the connotation is misleading.

Are not people from Canada "Americans"? Mexico?, Brazil? ... and gulp... Cuba? We are all peoples that inhabit North or South American, so doesn't that make all of us "Americans"?

There is no offence to you or any others that live in North America or any where else but America (USA) sets right in the middle surrounded by the wonderful countries of Mexica & Canada, though this Post is related to those that live in America yet wanting to hear from all. America is big & concerned & happy with all, needing all the words from all, so we may become connected in the right of ways.

Ok, I have to ask this.

Obviously this thread's originator meant USA Americans. You knew it, he knew it, we all knew it.

Did you really feel it necessary to send a 'shout out' to all these other "also Americans", as if they'll feel left out if we don't? I'd like to understand your motivation. You feel like USA Americans are arrogant, perhaps?

I have no problem being referred to as an "American"... its just a small point of no consequence.

I am very proud to call myself an American. America offers what no other nation on Earth offers, freedom to be what you want as long as don't impede anothers right to pursue happiness.
But to answer the question, what is an American? There are a lot of people that live here that are not Americans. To me an American is someone that takes pride in the USA for the opportunities that America offers. Opportunities like freedom, the chance to be what you want to be, the pursuit of happiness. To be an American means that you know that this is the greatest country to have ever existed in the history of mankind. To know that any dream you have is possible in America.

I agree with you 100%, except that this may be the America in past tense terms. Once the socialism and marxist moves this administration is making takes complete hold in the country, they'll have to rename us the USSA - United Socialists States of America. When that happens, you'll be able to only be what the government dictates is needed, and you'll get paid according to thier scale. It won't matter what you're paid, really, because most of it will be redistributed to those more "needy".

Just curious have you lived in (or even visited for that matter) other countries?
Your remarks make me believe you haven't and have a very limited view of the world.

I have lived in 3 countries and if it taught me 1 thing it is that there is no greatest country in the world. Every country has advantages and disadvantages.

How do you square that comment with this one?

And from the looks of it the current administration is taking the fast way towards that end. Scary!

"Socialist" has always been the rallying cry that people have used in the past, in order to incite people. It's currently being used to rally a political base, by making the other side "less American" - it's a bit sad, because the demonization of alternate viewpoints prevents us from reaching any productive middle ground. It's easy to simply point fingers at one side or another, but it's not nearly as beneficial as simply (a) recognizing that both sides of an issue feel strongly and have some basis for thier opinion, and (b) compromise is actually possible with people we don't agree with.

Regarding the central question of this thread: Nationalism is all well and good. However, we at times (and we are not the only country guilty of this) allow blind nationalism to prevent us from working productively with other countries. Being an American, IMO, balances pride with the opportunities our country offers, with a sense of humility that we are not the only land that matters in the world. Someone once said to me: "We have to decide if America wants to lead the world, or to rule it".

For some if you are not extremely rightwing where there should be no govenement at all you are labeled a socialist (while they really mean communist )
IMHO it says more about them than about you..
