My son's iPod isn't recognised by his (Vista) laptop when
connected by USB unless no other USB devices are connected. It
works fine then, and it works fine with 2 other PCs (one XP, one
Vista), and all the obvious things like swapping cables,
resetting and reformatting the iPod have no effect.

The problem is that his music library is on an external HDD,
connected via USB, so he needs them connected at the same time!

A weekend of 3 of us Googling had come up with nothing useful -
    any bright ideas?

Are you connecting both devices directly to the laptop or via an external USB hub?

This solution may help; even though it's intended for a Mac, the basis is regarding hardware:

Also, it may be a driver conflict as well.
No problem should ever be solved twice.

Apple support forums may also be able to help. Users with similar problems can provide insight.

HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!
