It truly has been an historic election. Although technically, he's President Elect Obama. He won't be President Obama until January.

Incredible. My faith in America has been restored. A historic election - a historic man - a historic shift in American politics.

BTW - an extremely dignified concession speech by John McCain.

    Congratulations to President-Elect Barrack Obama!!!

You beat the hell out of the working class in this country for over 8 years, fling good paying factory jobs out of the country as fast as you can, and then ask for a bailout for running wild without an ounce of regulation of the most rich and greedy...

I expected the most Populist candidate to win in those circumstances regardless of race or gender, the fact that it wasn't a white male for once is a nice bonus for America.

And how so? I mean, I thought we weren't supposed to be looking at race. I thought that race didn't matter--apparently it does if it somehow is a bonus.

I'd even go as far as saying that the first black president really isn't all that historical seeing as how many blacks in history held less prestigious positions, yet actually faced opposition based solely on their race.

It's a bonus precisely because race wasn't a significant factor - that dynamic wouldn't have been possible not too many years ago. And for a large segment of the population, they can tell their kids that they, too, can be president, which many people didn't really believe possible.

It's a bonus in the sense that it apparently did NOT matter, that being white is not a pre-requisite. Soon a woman will show being male is not a prerequisite.

And that is my problem; first though, let me state unequivocally:

I do believe that being the first of any group to accomplish something is deserves some pride; I'm just not on board with the notion that there exists any racial component that is history worthy--in fact, quite the opposite.

Back to the statement in bold. If you asked many black people a year ago, or even two years ago if it were possible for a black man to be POTUS, the sentiment would have been a resounding no.

At this point, I would charge that little--if anything--has changed over the last year or two regarding race in America.

This means that is has been possible for quite some time now for a black man to be President--which of course is the problem. People have believed it was not possible and based on what? In fact, to the contrary, many would have been very willing to cast a vote where Powell or Rice were on the ticket and Alan Keys made POTUS attempts as far back as 1996. Yet, despite these things people still require Obama to get elected before they believe it and you call that some sort of bonus? I don't, I call that a number of people choosing to believe less of not only themselves, but also of others in the face of evidence that says otherwise.

Call it a bonus, or a historical moment if you want . . . I sure as heck won't.
No problem should ever be solved twice.
