I don't do many faxes here in the BARYE cave -- so I can't assay how reliable it will be as a fax line -- how has it worked for you in the role ??

I wouldn't rely on it if I were a heavy faxer (too many instances of the connection down, or the computer's busy), but if you have no landline, it's a great option.

It's also excellent for making all those annoyinng parent conference calls in the afternoon/evening when you don't want to use your cell minutes!

for Skype users that want to use their cordless phone as you can with the majicJack, D-Link sells a product: dph-50U

This is what I have (though I hardly used it).

It enables easy switching between normal landline and Skype (and Skypeout) calls. It also enables things like call forwarding of incoming Skype calls to your cell.

It is not easily found for sale -- only a couple of places still have them -- it goes for approx. $37 + 12 shipping

Why recommend buy from the store? Is the online service so bad that returning is a problem?

I like the fax option. I don't do a lot of faxing but if this works, then it is definitely a plus.

I got the sense that they were not especially well staffed online -- when I finally got through they were polite and competent, but their site is terrible (an endless loop of things that don't lead where you want it to...)

aside from generously giving somewhat more profit to MajickJack, what advantage is there to not getting it in a store ??

Not paying for shipping, having a place to return it if it doesn't work, and being able to use immediately -- stores are useful...

Yes, you can use it to call the U.S. or Canada from anywhere in the world for free, I just did that while I was in Italy last month and my daughter took it to Israel this past summer while she was in school there and used it everyday. You can receive calls too. The phone will have a number from any area code you'd like.

As for calling Europe for free the answer is, no and maybe. No if you are calling a European phone number, yes if the person you are calling has a majicjack and you call that number. You can call Europe pretty cheaply, but you have to buy time first. I have never done that.

You can use it to call phones in Europe, but that costs more than your $20/year. But yes, you can take it to Europe and make calls home with it. I have a friend who just bought her mother one - she lives here in the states and her mother lives in Germany. Now her mom can call her 24/7 - ok, she'll probably regret it eventually.

Two things, first, you can surf the internet while using majicjack. You won't even notice a difference.

Second, I just noticed Radio Shack's ad for Friday only shows the Majicjack for $29.99 which included the first year of service. Pretty good deal.

I use a combination of gizmo and grandcentral to make AND receive free calls. With it on my n810, I'm also getting free phone service wherever there's wifi. Maybe not as mobile as a cell phone, but you can't beat the price.

I got the benefit of the $29.99 sale even though I bought it before Friday. I just went back, showed my receipt and ask for the discount.

I tried that gizmo/grandcentral combo but lost the patience in trying to get gizmo configured.

That's the first I heard of that complaint. I want to know what item you connect to the internet with that doesn't do that? What they are saying, I believe, is that if you call Chicago all the time, you're going to get advertising geared toward Chicago. I get advertising all the time geared for people my age on IE, Mozilla, my email account, etc. If you don't want people to target you for advertising, you better stick with hand delivery and face to face talking. Even AT&T, my landline phone company, advertises to me on how much I can save on long distance by my usage. Your cell phone carrier can tell you what package will be better for you by who you call. How do you think they do it? Same as Majicjack.

    You never have additional advertising?

Far as my cell phone, GC or other stuff, I never see any advertising that you are speaking... where do they send it? MajicJack sends it to your inbox?

Considering their website (sales pitch), I'd not be surprised though.

First know that I have never received advertising on my cell. That's not what I was saying. What I was saying is that my mobile carriers have always targeted their advertising towards my usage and profile (via email, on their website when I log in, mail). As for Majicjack, yes there is some advertising going on in the small window that comes up when I start Majicjack, but I minimize the screen and it doesn't show up again until I dial or receive a call. Then while I'm talking it's minimized again so I never know it's even there while I'm surfing the web (and getting my targeted ads from the rest of the web. )

Ah, so it sounds like they either have the advert like in microsoft instant messenger (at bottom) or the advert pops up in a separate window... either way, it sucks... reason I don't use Microsoft IM.

You pay for the service, then have to put up with adverts.... whatever...

Those of us who have used and written about MajicJack here, are idiots.

If we were not so damn blasted dumb we would have by now realized, that yes -- its a scam.

I confess in my personal ignorance, that I literally never saw any advertising until Rick mentioned where to look for it.

I still don't like their advertising... still looks like a scam... if you don't agree, boo hoo.

Don't you have some old threads to dig up or something? Quote yourself so you can tell us how smart you are? When majicjack kicks the bucket in <when ever>, I'll dig up this old thread and say, "I told you!" ROFL

MajicJAck -- like many companies -- may not survive junior's economic meltdown.

Maybe despite inexpensively providing an incredibly valuable and well functioning implemetation of hardware/software to get and make phone calls, this company will someday no longer exist.

If that day ever comes we will be out a few dollars -- a very few.

As even I said in my initial comments, their marketing sucks.

I would have focused more on people like us here: geeks with broadband.

It seems a no-brainer that everyone with broadband MUST have one of these. Twenty dollars a year for an unlimited american landline ??? From anywhere in the world ??? Sheeesh...

I would be running ads in Engadget, Digg, or even here -- if Treocentral accepted advertising (what is with that anyway ????).

Instead they are pitching with late night infommercials aimed to the same unwashed crowd that buys secret life extending elixirs (come to think of it, BARYE bought those too ... ).

Apart from, as you sagely observe -- providing BARYE with an opportunity to demonstrate how "smart" he is, the other (much less important) reason I referenced that particular thread was because it illustrated what this forum was once like -- how vibrant, intelligent, and mutually respectful it once was.

Those who participated in that thread were from extremely divergent points of view. About half of the contributors to that exchange were conservatives -- often times very conservative.

But we all gave each other alot of personal slack because we enjoyed the friction of argument and debate -- and understood that we needed the participation of the other side to have it.

This forum has lost much of that vibrantcy, too few participate -- and this makes BARYE sad

MajicJack is now has a special offer to add 5 years of additional service for $60 (they normally charge $100).

I like their product, want to support it, and understand the risk that they may not be around that long.

For me its worth it -- if you agree its a definite bargain.
