    Thanks.

Because clearly "Southern Democrats" were the ones who wanted to keep segregation and then magically transformed into modern GOPers at some point.
Actually, I said Dixiecrats who left the Democratic party and supported segregation. And it was the Dixiecrats who largely flocked to the GOP after 1948 - not Southern Democrats.

I'm not even talking about right-wing evangelicals. I'm talking about average blue-collar folks. Do you think the South is primarily right-wing evangelicals?
No I do not and I think I said just that. Firstly I was talking about Dixiecrats and secondly I said that I wasn't trying to paint ALL Southern Democrats with that broad of a brush.

That said, I do think that evangelicals were targeted and recruited by the right-wing into the GOP - the result in which tipped the scales to make several of them red states vs. blue states. But again, that is not to say that ALL southerners are right-wing evangelicals.

It has nothing to do with offense. It has to do with not offering them a compelling reason to vote for their traditional party base.
Well since my point was that the parties have changed dramatically (both parties) over time I guess I'm not sure what the traditional party base is to you? Traditional Democrats from FDRs era? JFKs? LBJ? Clearly not Clintons.

would folks be interested if I intiated a thread on the GOP -- how it came to be where it now is -- and where its going to be four years hence ??

(my question is addressed to everyone -- but most especially to righties...)

Can we refrain from using terms like these (righties/lefties)?
It is pigeonholing at best but could be taken as namecalling...

If you want to refer to a group of people either name them by username or give a description that sounds a bit less condesending...

(this off course applies to both sides of the political spectrum)

    Thanks in advance

AAMOF, all of the above fall under the umbrella (well, LBJ not as much, but...).

I think you missed the crux of my argument. You're a limp wristed ***... See how you pretty much stop paying attention to what I'm saying after that? If people were to eliminate the McShame or Lefties or all the other different labels they've used, maybe I'd actually stick around to listen to your argument. But since you guys continually want to, then I guess I won't bother.

Apparently I did. Maybe it could have been better stated?

Really? Well, I am not gay. But I find your attempt at using something as offensive as "limp wristed ***" quite illuminating about who you are.

Not really. I see you for what you are.

Yes, well I think the moderator has stepped in already about the name calling and everybody else seems to have gotten that message.

BTW - I didn't call you any names at all. I called the Republican party names and you took it upon yourself to take personal umbrage and inject a silly argument about Lincoln into the discussion. http://discussion.treocentral.com/sh...&postcount=921

I can see why the remark was made. You and a few others consistently throw those comments out when your frustration level rises.

Regardless of what others say, it does not justify language like that as a result of this an after the many warnings I have only 1 one option ledt: send him to the sin-bin to calm down for a couple of days...

I apologize. I went over the top in trying to reinforce my argument, and for that I'm sorry.

OK, you are lucky I'm in a good mood and I'll accept your appology.

Onward - none on the left have said anything about Biden's statement that within 6 months of Obama taking office, he will be tried, his backers have got to stand behind him because it will not appear that his reaction is/was appropriate.

Everyone knows that McCain will react strongly. Everyone suspects that Obama will react weakly, hence the test.

He never said that Obama's reaction will appear inappropriate, but rather that people may not agree with his decisions - an important distinction:

ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe Reports: Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., on Sunday guaranteed that if elected, Sen. Barack Obama., D-Ill., will be tested by an international crisis within his first six months in power and he will need supporters to stand by him as he makes tough, and possibly unpopular, decisions.

“Mark my words,” the Democratic vice presidential nominee warned at the second of his two Seattle fundraisers Sunday. “It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We’re about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don’t remember anything else I said. Watch, we’re gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy.”

“I can give you at least four or five scenarios from where it might originate,” Biden said to Emerald City supporters, mentioning the Middle East and Russia as possibilities. “And he’s gonna need help. And the kind of help he’s gonna need is, he’s gonna need you - not financially to help him - we’re gonna need you to use your influence, your influence within the community, to stand with him. Because it’s not gonna be apparent initially, it’s not gonna be apparent that we’re right.”

There is no distinction at all. Inappropriate or not agreeing - there is NO difference at all.

That is a bit deep for some to understand... the distinction is there.... thanks for posting... unfortunately, many make blanket statements without providing sources or explaining where they learned of the material.

Funny thing is, it is nice to know that they are looking to the future for possible situations, instead of standing around thinking we are safe. If they made no mention of "being tested" repub would then complain that obama/biden think being president is a cake walk. lol... whatever...

That is the problem with mccain, as with bush, just because someone steps on your new Air Jordans, you don't go off and shoot them in the face. Then again, you don't shoot someone close to the person who shot you in the face and then call it ok since that person was taller than you... (make no sense? Well look at our connection with 9/11 and Iraq...)

Well, I don't think the distinction is too subtle: I can think that someone's decision is honestly wrong, and that I would have made a different decision, without thinking that the person acted inappropriately.

It amounts to the timing of the response - will Obama react immediately or will he wait and see what public opinion is by watching the polls. When he reacts, will it be a Bill Clinton type of response with a cruise missile strike against an aspirin factory or will it be an invasion, something with teeth to it.

I think it is safe to say, whatever is appropriate... you don't invade every country because they pissed you off or their leader tried to kill your daddy many years ago.

By taking this tack, you legitimize all of Ben's "well look at Obama/Biden..." responses to criticisms of McCain.
