I have an Intel PC Pro webcam, cost me about $100. The quality is fine for what it is (640x480), but I would like a webcam with higher resolution (maybe a megapixel, or 1280x960). The maximum resolution on any webcam I have seen is 640x480. Has anyone ever come across a higher res USB unit?

I've never seen any webcams with higher resolution than 640x480.

But Target is having a clearance on the Intel Pocket PC Camera for $75. It's a webcam that can double as a digital camera. Intel web site sells it for $99. It works with Windows 98, ME, NT only. It does not work with Windows 95 or 2000.
