    I saw recently that gmail had IMAP servers.

    I have a couple of questions;

    I check gmail a few different ways. Express mail on vista at home, poutlook on the treo when I am on the go, via browser at work and through the mail application on my itouch occasionally.

    1. If I read a message on one device- the next time one of the other devices polls the server it will download the message and show it as read, correct?

    2. Has gmail resolved the issue that used to download outgoing sent mail through the pop server? If I poll imap.gmail.com (or whatever it is) am I still going to download a sent message on occasion? I forwarded my gmail to a different pop server for the last few years.

    Are there any other reason to adopt IMAP besides the use of folders?

    Thanks

    1. Yes, that is correct

    2. What I remember is no, you won't see a sent message as a new message. I used it for about a month, then had to stop since the time-outs drove me crazy. Plus, I did not like labels... I like folders... although, I agree that being able to label an email with many different "tags" is much better than folders... I still like folders.

    Gmail's IMAP is not really "true" imap... they still have some work to do on it (which they admitted.. not me talking out the side of my trap). Right now they only use labels, so any "folders" you create in IMAP is really a label. Although, they have said they will introduce folders in the future (something they are working on).

    The best free imap solution right now is with aol. AOL has had free imap for about 13 or 14 months. I started using it the day they introduced it... no issues in that time. Works like a charm... no outgoing tags when you use IMAP on aol either. I don't use aol as my main account though... I have paid accounts with everyone.net for that... I use aol for backups and some limited emails... same as I was attempting to use gmail for.

    Figure I'll go back to gmail once they smooth everything out. Had to be difficult attempting to get labels and everything else to work with IMAP. For their first attempt it was fairly good. But some people love gmail's imap... hats off to them...

    Thanks a lot for the response.

    What exactly does "outgoing tags" mean?
