I see really bad sit-coms repeatedly having people asking other people (Judges, Doctors, etc.) to 'turn them on!".

I'm sure someone would find a way to hack it.

PS whatever happened to CrocHunter? Did he even know what this would turn into?

PPS what a thread to hit my 300th post on....

Okeydoke. I presume each state's marriage and rape laws would be in sync (I hope!). I think it's 17 in New York.
There was a recent case of two high-school students who were married before they were 18, yet she became pregnant after he turned 18 and she was still 17; the wrong person learned of this and he went to jail, even though he is the girl's husband and they entered into the legal contract of marriage.

Yorick... you're picking at my words!!!!!
    Sorry.

Being able to take on the responsibility , (in my tiny world) means that they ARE capable mentally and physically to take care of the child.
well, I agree with that, but as you said "will" take responsibility ... "will" and "being able" are different concepts, and I have to take what I read, as I've not yet learned to mind-read across the internet. (I'm working on it though.)

Here's a cure-all. Why not neuter everyone, and have a license to get your "nuts" "turned on" ???
Sounds a little too close to fascism for me.
(to clarify before anyone harps on my use of "fascism": it's a political system characterized by heavy government involvement in enterprise, oppression of dissenting views and of particular cultural and/or racial groups, and of extreme levels of government control over the lives of the citizens.)
This nation was founded on the concept of "freedom of choice." As long as I'm a citizen here I'd like to keep my choice, thanks.

You need a license to drive an autocar, you need a license to even fish! Shouldn't something like creating another child require that you are able to bring him up?
yes, valid, but a vehicle is a man-made construct, as is a gun, marriage, and fishing. No-one invented reproduction. Pretty much anyone can do it, and they don't need access to special equipment (most of the time).
I guess my real objection is making it mandatory only for those under a certain age. I think many, many parents could use this information, but how do you enforce it?

I'm aware that some high school systems have parenting and homemaking classes but I don't think it's ever turned up in an adult-education program. I guess if our educational system had more funds available we could as a society turn out better people who are less likely to murder their neighbors. (in the global sense, I mean.)

Ugh! A buncha stuff here, I'm sure I'll forget some.
Maybe during the fraternal grandmother's time it was easier than today to raise a child at 16, maybe they were more educated then (didn't they learn Latin & calculus in high school back then, etc?); maybe not. Perhaps she was just a shining individual. But to make laws / broad policy its prob. more wise to do a statistical sampling.

I repeat, when I refer to "jail," it's a MUCH more idealized ver. than we have currently.

"Who will watch the watchers?" We, on the Web, to ensure they are doing their jobs properly in real time -- and if not, we can go right down there and put them in their own jail cells.

I think 40 is about the accepted age at which birth defects begin to seriously become a factor in pregnancies (but I'm not 100% certain).

Yeah, I forgot to reference the "father figure" syndrome.

It's not your ignorance. I don't think it's presently law ANYwhere to prevent ANYone from having sex AS YOUNG AS THEY LIKE -- that's the prob! Even on the talk shows where the try to "shame" the 13-yr. old "couple" into "admitting they made a mistake" having kids so young ... there never seems to be any legal consequence! It's just: "Okay, man -- that was a good show; good luck to you two raising them kids w/no education and no jobs."

Once more, tho, I'd RATHER NOT have society "put to the test" of whether or not kids should be jailed for having kids -- in the old days, the family, the clergy, the neighborhood, etc. was enough influence. But now, "in the era of no shame" (I think that's tomorrow's "Jerry Springer" topic, actually) it's "go ahead and do it."

Maybe 6 mo. of jail time would be more appropriate.

Hey, re that lock-&-key on the scrotum thing (er, to paraphrase)...
... maybe, instead, we could just cut all the men's scrotum's off, and place all the sperm in a World Universal Sperm Bank, and just make kids that way, or clone 'em, or something...
...because, then, men would STILL have plenty to live for! Who needs beautiful women to look at and lust after to inspire 'em, anyway -- that's been one of God's dumbest ideas yet, if you look at it from a certain angle, and....

Hey, some old Joe Jackson song lyrics just occurred to me:

    God, if you're up there
    Listen to my prayer
In Future Man please have a different design
    Give him a switch
So he can turn off his libido, yeah
Give him a tranquilizer built into his mind

Can't remem. the name of the tune -- anybody?
Like "Pretty Girls," or something. Maybe from the "Look Sharp" album / cd / collection.

I bet the rest of the song has relevance to this thread, too, but I can't remem. any more of the lyrics....

undoubtedly. The "school year" hasn't changed a whit in at least fifty years (that I know of) and there's a lot more information kids need to learn before they can go off to get jobs.

"Who will watch the watchers?" We, on the Web, to ensure they are doing their jobs properly in real time -- and if not, we can go right down there and put them in their own jail cells.
My problem with this idea is that it assumes the web will become more pervasive in all walks of life, that government will be willing to allow that sort of access (for example, here in NY, the current governor has made it a point of order in the past year to prevent prison access to a prisoner advocacy group), that a number of people will be willing to monitor these prisons on a volunteer basis ... it's a little nit-picky, sorry, I'm seeing I'm doing that tonite.

I think 40 is about the accepted age at which birth defects begin to seriously become a factor in pregnancies (but I'm not 100% certain).
I was thinking menopause, so okeydoke.

It's not your ignorance. I don't think it's presently law ANYwhere to prevent ANYone from having sex AS YOUNG AS THEY LIKE -- that's the prob!
hmm. perhaps education would help (as discussed above by myself & bblue).

Even on the talk shows where the try to "shame" the 13-yr. old "couple" into "admitting they made a mistake" having kids so young ... there never seems to be any legal consequence! It's just: "Okay, man -- that was a good show; good luck to you two raising them kids w/no education and no jobs."
ehhh ... modern TV talk shows are a sticking point with me. They create a particular and unreal environment where it's less about the discussion and more about the confrontation.
(i.e. I agree with your point.)

Maybe 6 mo. of jail time would be more appropriate.
I'm leaning towards house arrest instead of jail. (Even considering your idealized jail.) I mean, it's not as if they did something really wrong, like taking another's property or life. They brought a life into the world.

Yeah, neons ARE ugly... but the ads are so cool!

    ------

Going onto the "chop off dem nuts" bit, what if we implied the technology futurama sugguested: using robots????

"Billy, let's play a nice game of baseball"
"No thanks, I'd rather make out with my Marilyn Monorobot!"

"Billy, maybe you could come over to my house, and later we could make out!"
"No thanks, that's a long way to walk just for making out! I can just stay here with my Marilyn Monrobot!"

With all the Sperm deposited, every month we turn the robots in to empty em out. Then it's taken to feed starving children and/or given to women who decide it's time to have another child.

    Ah... the possibilities!!!

Yeah -- I just had to paste all the stanzas; they're all relevant (minus the "Down do be do do wop a do do wop a do do wop" rhythms)

I took a walk round the market down town
Taking it easy just to see what I could find
I found the girls there, long legs and blond hair
All getting set to make a mess out of my mind

Down do be do do wop a do do wop a do do wop

I got my heart burnt, you know where I hurt
They say the miniskirt is coming back in style
I say it's not fair but what do they care
When you've got power then you use it for a while

Down do be do do wop a do do wop a do do wop

God, if you're up there, listen to my prayer
In future man should have a different design
Give him a switch so he can turn off his libido now
Give him a tranquilizer built into his mind

Down do be do do wop a do do wop a do do wop

Don't talk to me about Women's Liberation
They already got their right just where it hurts

I agree that it's interesting that you have to have a license to drive a car but not to have a baby. I know several people that should never have had kids, but whaddya do?

I wish that states included some form of family classes before people could get their marriage license. That wouldn't cover teen/unmarried pregnancies, but it's a start.

I think D.D. was recently cited as being a billionaire. So it'd have to be for the love, not the money.
Do you have to get someone's consent in the V.R. world? Maybe a V.R. D.D. could equal (or surpass!) a V.R. Claudia Schiffer.

If she's a billionare, Jeff Hawkins is sleeping with her more than I thought! !!!!

Oh well, I guess it would be simply a fake her. They would probably replace the parts of Donna Dubinsky they can't get to with say... Janet Reno??

They would also have to rename it. Say: Deanna Dobynzki ??

    3 in a ROW!!!
