As a former developer it really ticks me off when I see people stealing software and then rationalizing it by claiming they were somehow "forced" to steal because of something the developer did.

It ticks me off even more to see a website condone stealing, with one of the website's main writers openly admitting he has stolen software for years. I posted this to Palminfocenter and the post was immediately deleted. Just another sign of how that site has gone downhill, I suppose.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

(This post was deleted from where it was posted in the iPhone vs Treo article. It is reposted below. It will be interesting to hear what Tim Carroll has to say about it.)

I just finished reading the entire thread on the iPhone vs Treo and was shocked that Palminfocenter would publish such a silly, trolling article. The article and Mr. Carroll's responses are what I would expect from a troll who is desperate for attention. Has Palminfocenter now sunk to resorting to posting ANYTHING in an effort to generate controversy?

I see that Mr. Carroll recently proudly admitted here that he has been a software THIEF for several years:

"Posting links isn't the same as admitting you're a software pirate, SV. But please, no snipes about ethics from the Anonymous Amateur Stock Manipulator.

(By the by, I have no problem admitting I've never paid for Windows. Ever. Nor has anyone I know, except the businesses I've worked for. And it's Microsoft's own fault: when you charge $751 AUD for the non-crippled version of your OS, you are effectively encouraging people to steal it instead. I'd feel guilty, if they didn't post obscene profit upgrades annually. It's gouging, and only a fool would fork out that much for something you can get for free.

I buy my video games, I buy my Palm OS apps, I buy pretty much all the software I use. Not Windows.)"

    http://www.palminfocenter.com/comments/8819/#135620

"Also, I'm not sure whether the sarcasm in that post indicated you thought I steal all my software. I don't. Just Windows...

Pirated versions of Windows are actually a superior product to the crap MS wants you to pay exorbitant prices for. No Product Activation hoops to jump through. No Genuine Advantage spyware. And soon, I'm sure, no built-in DRM bull**** into Vista either."

    http://www.palminfocenter.com/comments/8819/#135647

"I certainly don't feel guilty about it, put it that way. Not when, as I mentioned, the legit copies are actually more of a pain in the **** to maintain & install than the illegal ones...

Anyhoo, you are right: I'm clearly in the moral wrong by stealing Windows. But do I feel bad? Not in the slightest. Childish? Maybe... but to be frank, I always hope to be a little childish, even when I'm old and wrinkly. Life's more fun that way. And when it comes to Windows, it's certainly a helluva lot cheaper.

    http://www.palminfocenter.com/comments/8819/#135649

Can someone please explain why a person with such poor ethics is being employed by Palminfocenter to write articles? This individual needs to be fired. Immediately.

From what I can see, people who genuinely believe that theft of intellectual property is actually theft are in a minority. In fact, IMO, it isn't even close.

The problem with Windows is that their restrictions are expensive. One computer, and if it crashes and you need to reformat the hard drive, you may not be able to reinstall???
HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!

Who are you to decide what the price of software should be? You didn't write it. You didn't spend the resource dollars to come up with the product. It isn't yours.

No matter how you rationalize it you are a thief. You are using software illegally and without a license and using it in a matter inconsistent with it's labeling. I really doubt that if software wasn't so abstract such as a car then you wouldn't go around stealing it, but you do. You are a disgrace to human kind and what we all stand for. How about this; You give us your address so we can come and take things from you. I'm sure you would love that. Everytime you buy or steal, in your case, something we come take it from you. You'll have nothing. You'd be better off living in the woods as a cave man which is pretty much what you are promoting theft. I guess you don't realize that if everyone does as you do there wouldn't be any windows.

If you don't believe the price of software is justified then don't use it. Me, I wait for the price of said software to drop until I buy it which usually means waiting a few years. I've been doing that for decades. I guess you don't have the moral nor the self control or diginity to wait for your software. Instead, you steal it, never paying a single cent to those who work their life to produce a product. If you can't afford it go to a computer cafe or some sort and rent your time or something. People who can't afford property rent. Is it so unreasonable for you to do the same with software and computer time?

If you truly believe you are in the right, why don't you post your real name and address and we can all make you a true martyr for the cause.

The Voice of Reason, (aka Robin G, the chupacabra, null developer, heimlich, jimmy_jimmy) is a well known troll, shill and liar and has been using multiple anonymous accounts on this board and on PalmInfocenter for many years to post lies and to stir up controversy in the palm community.

Please don't bother to waste your time talking to this troll. It's not worth the effort to reason with someone, who clearly has none.

Can you elaborate on that please??

I bought my copy of Windows XP Home in the fall of 2001. It's now 6 years later and I've gone through 4 computers and countless hard drive failures where I had to reinstall, not to mention all the times I was bored and wanted to reinstall, just for the "fun" of it.

I don't know who these other people are whom you refer to.

Freakout has admitted that he steals software on this board. That is all proof I need.

If you are the real palminfocenter.com administrator then heed this.

You will fire Mr. Tim Carroll and you will write a public apologization for his actions.

I have taken this matter up with a lawyer and will be having them contact both the PA AG office and the CA AG office to have them do something about your site and your policies of promoting software piracy. If they are unable to do something under their statue I will have the matter forwarded to the Federal authorities who I know for a fact can deal with people like you.

The least that will happen is your site and all it's affiliates will be taken offline.

Thank you very much. Software piracy is not allowed in the United States of America dear Sir.

    Dear Sir/Mam.

palminfocenter.com is registered in the United States of America.
Also, mobileinfocenter.com is registered to palminfocenter and is registered under the same person. Theses two sites are linked to one another and the same person.

I am sure you know what to do from here. Thanks for your help.

Not to sound like I'm doubtful anything will happen, but

Great if it does though! I hate it when people blatantly steal stuff like that. Especially when they're in such a role as they are.

It's one thing if some guy says, well, yeah, I stole a song once (not that I condone that), but another to come out and say it like that.

By the way, I loathe the word heed. I had a customer get in my face and tell my I should take heed because she said she's a mystery shopper. Ever since then, I laugh uncontrollably for about a minute whenever I hear that word. Just annoying.

Vista has a different restriction. I checked MSFT's website and it claims you need to buy a license for every computer. The license is almost the same as the first copy. I never installed Vista and had to reformat, so I can't say the other statement is completely true, but I do know it's like a brand new computer when you reformat and/or need to install a new hard drive. Maybe if you call and beg MSFT(like I had to do when I needed to reinstall Front Page several years ago), they'll give you a new activation number "free". That's right, if you uninstall and try to reinstall even on the same computer, you may not be allowed to unless you call and beg.

Then MSFT wonders why it's software is bootlegged!!! I don't like bootlegs due to problems, but I can see why people who can't just keep throwing down $200 every time might!
HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

Wow, I didn't know that, about Vista. Is it something a lot of people have had problems with? I really don't frequent PC forums, especially now that I've switched to a Mac, but that seems like a major problem for Microsoft. I've never had any problems in the past when I've had to reinstall and ran out of licenses, and I've done this with Windows XP, Office XP (yeah, it's old, maybe that's why), and Norton SystemWorks. Any of my other software let me install without any kind of activation.

I guess I stand corrected. Maybe Vista will become more lenient after more people start using it. I'm sure now, a lot of people are pooling their money together to buy one copy and install it on everyone's computer. I could never do that, I'm the kind that I HAVE to have my own copy.
  14. #14
If you install Windows multiple times you will need top contact them to verify you have a genuine copy. It takes less than 5 minutes. I've had to do it before. If you don't like the way Microsoft handles their products then don't use them. If you want to use their products then it is they who control how you use them which is their right since it is thier software.

If you think this thread is boring then don't read it. You should be concerned with how software is treated because it isn't very far down the road to where everything will be electronically communicated including the work you do unless you dig ditches.

I hope that MS will do something about this. Palminfocenter and Mr. Tim Caroll are only promoting the thievery of others and if Mr. Tim Caroll is any representation of his fellow citizens then an example should be made out of him. Nothing short of a public stoning and tar and feathering would be appropriate.

I admit I use Windows for tasks that I need it for. For those applications I don't, and for alternate platforms on which I don't want to spend money on a licensed OS, I use an alternate free OS.

If you really have that much problem with Windows, then don't use it. Try out Ubuntu or Fedora. You will lose some interoperability but gain much in value. You can reinstall to your hearts content. You could even help out the software development process, either in code development or in beta testing.

    Be proactive, rather than negative.

That's a little harsh. I've always thought of OT as the "Island of Misfit Toys".

Kinda hurt my feeling. OT is the main reason why I pop in. O well, I guess I'll go back to the Huffington Post.
