I personally find this story touching when thinking about what the tragic story might have been. I am also left to wonder who would have done this to them and why. The comments following this story are pretty interesting as well and very greatly on their perspective.

    Locked in an eternal embrace

Yesterday at Mantua, in an amazing echo of that heartrending story, archaeologists revealed the discovery of a couple locked in a tender embrace, one that has endured for more than 5,000 years.

The find was unearthed by experts digging at a neolithic site at a less than romantic industrial estate. Scientists are to examine the skeletons to try to establish how old they were when they died and how long they have been buried.

One theory being examined is that the man was killed and the woman then sacrificed so that his soul would be accompanied in the after life.

Ouch. I had not seen that speculation. My ever cheerful heart conjured up a young couple that had tragically died TOGETHER and were thus buried this way to continue their journey . . . . .

I was very moved to hear this story yesterday on my car radio but had forgotten all about it. I think it is destined to become a classic image in the world of Archeology. Thanks for putting up the photo and article.

A very moving image to be sure. Could they be the remains of adam & eve? I read that their age was estimated to be 6,000 years.

It's an interesting theory but it really could have been anything that took their lives. I think there was an epidemic ravaging the people of the area. Everyone knew that once you got sick from this disease you were undoubtedly going to die, and soon. The sick were being torn from their families and forced out of the city walls left to die. That's when a young woman fell ill from this deadly disease. Unable to bear the thought of his love dying alone in the cold, this woman's husband concealed her illness. Unfortunately, that act of selflessness came at a cost as he too soon succumbed to the illness.

As his wife grew weaker and her ultimate end was in clear sight, this man lay holding her as she exhaled one last time. Already weak with illness and now torn with grief he spent what would be his last remaining hours clinging to his lost love, unable to do anything but stare and softly caress her face. He died too as did all of the people of their town.

As the weeks passed, and the epidemic had run its course, relatives came to the abandon town looking to find their loved ones and to bury the dead. When they stumbled across the young couple they were so taken with the sight and the obvious love that this couple had for one another, they removed the pair, careful not to separate them from their loving embrace, and buried them in the same grave just as they were.

Maybe they were trying to throttle each other when felled by poison darts from the other tribe...

I think so -- and they did die in a final embrace -- these two were buried by others and apparently 'posed' for their eternal journey.

I am not sure about a couple at Pompei....but I wouldn't doubt it. I do know that they found a lot of moms and dads trying to protect their children in Pompeii.

Besides, 5000 yrs is a lot older than Pompeii.

I still think they were ripping each other's throats out. Has it been confirmed that this was a male-female couple?

My reference was to the Snickers Superbowl commercial (which has been now withdrawn):
