Any of you ever travel Route 66 while using your Treo & GPS? How does this work? It seems all popular mapping software would not be able to even show route 66 as it is not officially a highway any more. Any tips?

    Always wanted to, never have.

I think Route 66 is pretty broken up these days but it would be fun to try. You're probably right about GPS maps not listing it as Route 66. I'd map it out first.

    You've been watching Cars, eh?

Here's some GPS info on Route 66.

I just did watch that movie. Does the view really looked like that?

Well, they obviously took a lot of artistic license considering it is an animated feature. However, the photos I've seen, especially of the Texas to California portion, certainly aren't far off.

One interesting thing to consider is that there are areas (at least here in the midwest) where old Rt.66 travelled over MULTIPLE roads! (of course, at different time periods).

There are roads that have the historical marker signs posted that state (paraphrasing) "Route 66, 19XX through 19XX" then a few roads away, the same sign might appear but with different dates. So this adds to the confusion!

I'm a VW fanatic and one of the clubs I'm in is planning a complete Rt.66 road trip for the summer of 2007 which will make a pit stop in Roswell, NM for the 60th anniversary of the infamous Roswell UFO crash convention! should be a good time.
