I believe it's violates laws against the sexual exploitation of minors via the Internet.

Some of these "laws" are still subject to interpretation and are poorly crafted. For example if you download nude pictures of an underage person (under 18 yrs), technically you could be prosecuted, even if you did not distribute the images yourself or solicit any underage person. You could still be prosecuted even if you didn't know that the person was underage.
Now clearly in Foley's case he knew what he was doing (as did the 16 yr old) but so far there's no evidence that he transcended dirty talk and "solicited" sex. But septimus is right - there's no point splitting hairs about that - that's like Clinton trying to define "sex". The fact is that no harm was actually done, and this whole situation has turned into a political cannibalistic orgy.
Hastert may end up paying the same price as Martha Stewart and Clinton - the cover up (or even the perception of a cover up) is more severely punishable than the actual non-criminal but non-ethical activity.

As a follow up to whmurray's point - how many people would guess that the page is still a virgin? How likely will he remain that way before he reaches 18?

Has it been shown that there is in fact someone under 18 involved? I ask, cause I do not know.

One of the women (her name escapes me for now) has had her story publicized fairly broadly in some media circles.

They both described environments where they felt intimidated from making complaints -- where their superior could (and did) transfer non-compliant underlings from safe duty to guarding convoys.

I can only report what I heard, and it seemed like a potentially uncomfortable and unhealthy environment depending on where and who was in charge.

Back to Foley -- I just read this article in the Wash. Post that goes into some detail as to his sexuality, and the degree to which it was known.

I was mistaken in presuming that he had no normal adult gay relations. The article says that he has had a more or less open relationship with a Doctor for some time. It was known both in the congress and in his home district.

I don't think that pediphillia is inherent in gay sexuallity.
(BTW -- pedophillia is usually defined as lusting after young children -- I think that sexual desire toward 16-17 yr. olds is regarded somewhat differently.)

What Foley actually did was awful -- and what he was attempting to do was reprehensible. But from what we have so far heard -- there have been as yet no reports of his ever succeeding in his attempts.
Yeah, been a while. The TC community changed and not nearly as fun, but I was bored so I jumped on here.

I can not speak the specific situation as I was not there, nor have I been there for about a year now. If this is happening then someone is walking on thin ice, commanders will be held responsible if it is on their installation. Harrasement is a serious issue in the Armed Forces.

If Foley did contact minors (under 18) and attempted to arrange sexual contact he should serve time, if he contacted young men (over 18) then he has stepped down in disgrace. I also feel too many are trying to make political points out of this and it is going to backfire on many in elected positions on both sides and I hope it does.

Let me see if I can reply to this nicely enough to not get a warning.

Well hello again Cardio my old chum. Lovely day isn't it? In regards to your query my best advice would be to possibly read the original source of this story. If that's not too much trouble. If it is, I'll understand completly. Have a nice day.

I am glad that Foley resigned. I hope that Hastert will have the grace to do the same. Since it has happened and cannot be undone, I hope that the electorate will add it to the justifications for changing the House in November.

That said, I am not prepared to mis-characterize what happened in order to foster those things. I will not cooperate with those who try to manipulate the American electorate by appealing to its emotions rather than its reason. I want to choose my words carefully and to be sure that I am not trying to inflame.

So your short answer would be NO.

    Classic Dat, classic.

When one station puts a red X over a certain republicans picture it is simply a human error, and we should forgive and forget. Anyone who said anything else is accused of wearing tin-foil hats......

Fast forward to a different station putting a D instead of an R and we get "When they do crap like this it really is tacky."

That statement gets funnier everytime I read it. Thanks, it has been a long day and I really needed the laugh.

It doesn't change the fact that Mr. Foley is a dolt. Stipulated.

It doesn't change the fact that Mr. Hastert is a dolt. Stipulated.

What it DOES change is how all of us -- on the spectator side of the fence -- behave. Let's wait 12 hours to see how this rolls out, and above all keep an open mind, regardless of how we fall in the D/R label department.

To me, it looks more and more like Political Dirty Tricks 101 played against a particularly clueless (at best) set of opponents. And played by people who are every bit as odious as their targets.

    Off topic here.

For those of you who have not yet found the "Ignore" function in your user profile, might I suggest that you take it for a test drive? It might improve your serenity.

It's pretty funny to read a thread like this with gaps in the dialog for the posts by members that I've flagged with "Ignore." I don't think I missed any of the points being raised, but I KNOW that I have missed the gratuitous bile.

    Thanks, vBulletin, for this feature.

I do not have a problem with "minors." The use of "children" in this context is gratuitous, not to say, inflamatory.

Mr. Hastert had the opportunity to step down with grace today. That opportunity will not come again.

In all likelihood the party will force him out in an attempt to salvage the election.

But do please reserve judgement until we've checked with every 15 - 17 year old across the nation.
