    I HATE Spyware!!!!!!!!!!

Even though I take more precautions than most, I still end up getting hit with it once in a great while. They are getting smarter in their install process to make sure that they are not listed on the installed programs list, misleading Reg entries, obscure file names (or closely imitating valid file names) in system folders, challenging to find the point that launches it at startup, etc.... Because of this, they are often hard to remove completely, even once identified.

I am just venting here as I have been struggling to find a new one that hit me last night. It has apparently added me to several commercial mailing lists as I if signed up myself for them. Luckily most of them had a subscription confirmation email which made is easy to remove myself from those. It also stalls my system for up to 20 seconds on a regular basis while it does it's thing....whatever it is.

I have run all of the following:

    Webroot Spy Sweeper
    AdSubstract
    Lavasoft Ad-aware
    Netspy
    Spybot

    So far nothing

I have had this happen about a year ago. Then after dealing with the attack for about 2 weeks in vain, all of the scanners started detecting it and removing it. It was apparently a brand new spyware that the scanners had to catch up with.

I finally bailed on Windows because this was bothering me so much. They are getting smarter and smarter with this stuff. I had one I just could not get rid of and I finally gave up and reformatted.

I still have a couple Windows computers, but I surf on my new mac just to avoid this. I am sorry for your situation. At some point I think it is just worth a fresh install.

I'm with you cellgeek. Macs are the way to go to avoid viruses and spyware. This commercial is funny!

The inertia from your arms must have kept the water in the buckets.

They are bad at one thing, allowing me to play the video games I want to within a year of their release.

(also, of all the computers I've ever had, a Mac OSX was the first one that went completely corrupt on me with no ability to recover. Complete data loss)

Get with the program....MACs are for wimps! Just kidding!

Actually switching OS is not a possibility for me due to work. I am left with these malicious battles that I must endure and win on a case by case basis! Woe, is me

And crap like this doesn't help much either:

For safe web browsing on a PC, check out Green Border:

Highly recommended by Walt Mossberg, too, for those who put stock in his opinions. It only support IE now, but they say they're working on Firefox support.

Oooh, another Linux user. It's hard to find people who actually USE Linux. Half the people I know who use Linux have never compiled a custom kernel, built drivers which did not already come with the distro, and need everything done for them automatically... I don't understand what the point of using Linux is if you don't hack around it a little, that's why it (and almost all of the software for it) is open-source. I'm developing a script which allows laptop users to configure a network interface at boot instead of having to preconfigure one. I'm close to implementing DUN, but I don't how I'm supposed to modify config files. So I think I may just wind up making a copy of the original and using redirector symbols to create an entirely new file. Do you have any suggestions?

I can recommend this site (a forum) to get assistance with getting rid of stubborn malware: www.malwareremoval.com.

They're usually pretty on top of things. Even though the new rootkit problem that daThomas cited is more tricky. I understand F-secure has a scanner on their website (no charge) for this rootkit. Maybe others. You can get more info here:
