I like soccer. It's fun to watch. But I have a big problem with it: the players act like children. They are way too quick to whine, cry and complain about the mean players on the other team. Usually I think it's just a quaint artifact of the game, and really not a big deal. Then I saw a play in today's 3rd place game for the World Cup. A player was obviously fouled as he broke to the goal with the ball and no one in front of him. The last defender clearly grabbed the offensive player to prevent him from going forward. However, instead of fighting through the grab and going to goal, he pulled up and scowled. Yes, he got the call, but he lost the chance at the goal. It appeared he would rather get a foul called on the other team than have a clear shot at the goal. Maybe that's the "right" way to play the game, but it sure looks like they are more interested in getting the ref to criticise the other team than they are in winning the game.

Sounds kind of like risking the World Cup final by head-butting a player in the chest in OT and getting red carded.

"Scommetto che il mio sterno è più duro di la parte superiore della vostra testa e là è senso non potete dimostrare al contrario"
    (according to babelfish)

Back to the original post, you'd find plenty of people here in the UK who would agree with you KRamsauer, considering the money they earn they act like spoiled kids at times. There have been some legendarily tough players in the past, but there aren't many any more.

I agree too, they should add video-refs (like they seem to have done in the final?) and if somebody dives they should get send of for ruining the game..
Also they can punish nasty fouls better since a video ref can see more things at once and replay actions..
And there will be no more debate on if something was offside..

It would clean up the sport quickly..

Oh, I still think they are tough -- the game can be nasty at times. That's why it shocks me when they do act like babies.

Babelfish makes some really cool translations. It makes common language seem like high poetry.

You obviously don't watch footie that much if it still shocks you. It just annoys me.

I'd like to propose footie as an International English word for Association Football. You yanks don't call American football footie do you, so the word is free for use there? The word "soccer" has connotations of being posh (like "rugger" for rugby), which given the working class nature of the game over here can cause distaste. The class system in't dead yet.

We spell it "footy" Down-Under. And footy is generally used for Australian Rules Football, and sometimes for Rugby League or Union.
