Yes, its a definate goodbye to Serbia-Montenegro.

And it will be the last time that these two countries will be playing together given Montenegro's independance.

Imagine the talent in a combined Yugoslavian team. It would be awesome !!!

Brazil should be worried about Argentina. It pumped 6 goals through one of the best defences going into the Cup.

Messi is a fantastic player and is on his way to beening the best in the world, and ronadinho has even admitted this. The boy is amazing and its great to see players like that.

Im so happy to see england through to the last 16, and am really enjoying it this time around, shame some of the games have been a little boring but what can you expect.

    Goodbye Ivory Coast.

    Some great teams are going through to the next round;
Ecuador, Germany, England, Sweden (should !!), Argentina, Netherlands

Looks like the second round games and finals are going to be some of the best ever seen. Very close !!

Brazil are a great team but I think that they can be beaten by a number of other teams if they play to their potential; Germany, Argentina, Holland, Spain, and even England.

Damn, I love soccer, sorry Football.

This has been the most entertaining Cup for me. It helps that every game is being broadcast and TiVo makes it even easier to follow.

Now, if the US just can get their act together and advance it will be a "great" Cup. If not, I will continue to root on Portugal!!!

On an off topic note: How many others agree that the US would be better served by having more of their players in the European leagues as opposed to the MLS? I think that is one of the reasons we looked so outclassed by the Czechs; we just aren't used to that level of play.

You will find that in any team except Saudi Arabia the best players play in one of the four big leagues, England, Spain, Italy or Germany. Not too many of the French team play in France, for example, especially not their stars.

USA-Italy ends in a draw. Oh well, I'll take it. Ghana winning is a bit of good news for the US though.

Unfortunately I was only able to catch the last few minutes. But from what I gathered there was lots of red. It also looked like Italy was spending a fair amount of time off sides. I wish I'd seen the whole game.

The refs were disgraceful in the Italia-USA game. They should be driven out of Germany in shame

    Oh, and goodbye to Iran.

I watched the match tonight and was very impressed with the US tonight. It was a completely different team, compared to the game against the Czechs.

The US dominated the beginning of the game, making Italy focus their game on mostly Defense. Then when they were two men down, vs Italy only being one man down...they held their own with good defense, with even some moments of great offensive pressure.....including the goal that was made and recanted because of McBride obstructing the goalie.

All in all it was an exciting game to watch.

The ref that was dealing red cards like it was a deck of cards at a poker table was actually suspended from reffing 4 years ago for making inconsistent calls in games. I have no idea how he made to a World Cup Game, and there was a lot of talk that there will be a lot of pressure to make sure he does not ref another one. There has only been 4 games in World Cup history that has had 4 red cards, the last in 1998. (....boy reading a few newspaper articles, and I begin to sound like I know what I am talking about! )

Here is a summary of what has to happen for the US to progress to the next round:

The United States tied Italy 1-1 on Saturday night in its second World Cup match. Italy leads Group E with four points, while the Czech Republic and Ghana each have three. The United States is last in the group with one point. On Thursday all four teams will play their last match of the first round. The United States faces Ghana, while at the same time, Italy plays the Czechs. Only the top two teams in the group will advance to the second round.

For the Americans to advance, they must defeat Ghana in their last game. In addition to beating Ghana, the U.S. team needs one of these scenarios to take place:

    1. Italy defeats the Czech Republic.

    2. Italy ties the Czech Republic 0-0 or 1-1 AND the United States beats Ghana by at least four goals.

    3. Italy ties the Czech Republic 2-2 or with a higher score AND the United States beats Ghana by five or more goals.

    4. Italy ties the Czech Republic 2-2 or with a higher score AND the United States beats Ghana by four goals AND the U.S. team scores at least three goals more than the Czechs do in their tie.

    5. The Czech Republic beats Italy AND the total combined margin of victory for the Americans and Czechs is six or more.

    6. The Czech Republic beats Italy AND the total combined margin of victory for the Americans and Czechs is five AND the U.S. team scores at least three goals more than the Italians do in their loss.

    7. The Czech Republic beats Italy AND the total combined margin of victory for the Americans and Czechs is five AND the U.S. team scores exactly two more goals than the Italians do in their loss AND the Americans win a drawing of lots by FIFA.

For my part, and I've not watched any punditry or replays since the match finished, I thought the USA were playing a very physical game and making too many rash challenges, which is why they went two men down. The elbow in the face of McBride by de Rossi was cynical and dirty, no hesitation in a straight red. The first red for Mastroeni was justified, he could have broken the other player's leg with that tackle. Eddie Pope's first yellow was a little harsh, but then he should have been careful and not gone in for the rash tackle that got him his second.
The midfields largely cancelled each other out, the USA team were clearly under instructions to keep the italians closed down and under pressure, and they did a great job of it, even if they did go in for tackles a bit too keenly at times. It was a great performance not to buckle under with only 9 men on the pitch but the Italians also should have been able to exploit that, I reckon their press will be slagging the Azzurri off big time.
Under the old offside rule there wouldn't have been any question that McBride was offside for the disallowed goal, it's now more of a judgement call by the linesmen (sorry, referee's assistants) whether a player is in an active position.
Oh and Hobbes, there were only three red cards

    Sniff, bye bye US.

I'm happy to see Ghana go on though...I just wish I had watched their games.

The US had a good team, but not good enough for the World Cup this year. Plus they had bad bad luck on the last two games. If they had only won the first game things would have been much better for the US.

    Treolo,

    Bad luck?
Had only won the first game?
You make it sound like it was a close match...
    They lost by 3 goals...

They've got some good talent but I think there was just too much hype about this team this year.
