Okay, it's been two years since I've had a decent vacation (wait, its actually been two and a half. Crap, now I'm depressed). Anyway, its high time I take a vacation and I'm thinking April/May-ish depending on where I go. I'm half tempted to go someplace I can take my Treo but that's not a necessity (as noted on another thread, my Treo has been doing so well it deserves a vacation of its own).

So I'm looking for ideas of where to go. Do I do something more out of the way like Australia/New Zealand? Europe's kind of pricey but I've heard Croatia's become a nice inexpensive vacation destination. Or do I go someplace closer? I'm not too much into the touristy stuff but a few days on a Cabo beach sounds pretty good right now. What do you guys think? I'm open to suggestions.

I'm going to Hawaii in 11 days

A coworker went to Australia/New Zealand a few years ago and really liked it (snorkeling). He also went to Africa the civil unrest made it less enjoyable than it could have been.

Local: bed and breakfast in a beach town up the coast (cal of course) Santa Barbara on foot for a few days.

Other: New Zealand for sure....way more expensive though..and possibly not as relaxing depending on how long you stay. 2 days will be eaten up on a plane.

Do you have any specific interests (i.e., beach, hiking, bars, museums, etc.)?

Some of my favorite places to go on vacation:

    Beach

Very quiet, relaxing, and fairly inexpensive: Flamenco Beach, Culebra

Excellent beach to do plenty of outdoor stuff and party: Patong Beach, Phuket, Thailand

    Old World and Awesome Food

    Capri Island, Italy

    Not Too Far

    Acadia, Maine

Go to British Columbia. We flew to Seattle, drove up the border to Vancouver, BC. and then to Banff. Skied there for a few day and then flew out from there. It was awesome!

Loved Bermuda.... clean and nice compared to some other islands.
Good Beaches, Golf, history, and the locals didn't beg the tourists.

We took a cab (a thrill ride itself) to a beach on the other end of the
island (Tobacco Bay) that had mostly just us on it.

Best thing I ever did was take a mountain biking trip through the national parks in Utah.

Wow. See? Got a question, go to TC. Thanks everyone for the tips.

Hawaii: Undoubtedly a fun and beautiful place. This time I think I'd like to go someplace a little quieter and less touristy. But it is a thought. (have fun Laurie!)

New Zealand: One of my top choices. Plus, I think May is about late summer so it should be a good time. I'm going look into some destinations.

A couple of people mentioned the California coast. I love it being a Cali native myself but I wanted to try something new.

British Columbia: Again, beautiful. But I'm about Canada'd out for a while. No offense to our Canuck friends on TC but I've spent a large amount of the last few years there already and I'm looking for something, em, shall we say, a bit warmer.

Bermuda: Yes, a gorgeous and friendly island. Albeit a bit dangerous for the mopeds. I've spent a bit of time there on business and vowed to go back. This, too, is a thought.

Thailand: Another good choice since I have a friend there and could have a local tour guide. Thanks for the other tips, cash70. I'm going to look into those.

Utah: I'm sure that would be great but I've got a load of FF miles burning a hole in my pocket. Need to go a bit further.

The VI and other islands sound good too. I'll check into it.

Thanks again everyone! I'll let you know what I come up with.

Thanks, I know I will. Hopefully I'll get to spend a day hiking in Volcano National Park. I hear they might have some neat root structures.

I'll throw out a suggestion of St. Martin in the French West Indies. Beautiful beaches and people.
