    hey treocentral,

I just got a new palmone unbranded unlocked treo 650 (thanks for a friend who works are palm)

I'm going to be running the Treo on Cingular Medianet unlimited $19.99

What software programs are considered essential?

i hear alot of talk of people who load some kind of network manager to make sure i'm using the right type of data so i don't end up with those $200 data bills. which program is that exactly and where do i find it?

    any thing else ?

    thanks

    1. There is a good thread on this located here.

    2. Palm Gear has their own list located here.

    3. Handango's list is here.

I'm not sure what "network manager" you're referring to. People with unlimited data plans aren't using any such app because they don't need to worry about overage charges. That's why they have an unlimited plan.

However, the plan you have, as many others do as well, is not meant for PDAs. If one day Cingular does decide to start cracking down (up until now they haven't) you could be hit with some charges.

Maybe you were thinking of "Traffic Stat?"

I'm not sure what the network manager is that you're refering to. I think what you're thinking of is PDANet which lets you 'tether' (use treo as a modem for a laptop) and take advantage of your unlimited Media Net data plan.
    Get that here: http://www.junefabrics.com/
Or you can use the bluetooth "Dialup networking" feature already built in to your unlocked treo. The instructions on how to set that up are right on the Treo 650 support site: http://www.palm.com/us/support/treo/treo650gsm/ (right side, dialup networking guide.)
I'm not sure if there's really a difference technically as to whow PDANet and bluetooth DUN actually work to access your data plan. As far as I can tell they both do the same tether mode. PDANet does make it more simple to set up (it's what I use.)

You have Media Net unlimited, so you should never get additional data charges even for tethering. It's an unlimited flat rate data plan. Log in to your Cingular account online and look at the features. Make sure you see "MeidaNetunlimited" and you do NOT see "wireless internet pay per use (or PPU)" If you have both ask them to remove PPU (pay per use.) This is how people accidentally get dinged for data charges. If you ever get a big bill for additional charges call Cingular and ask them to credit the money back and fix the problem because you're on the unlimited data plan.

    As far as essentials go:
Xiino web browser is a faster web browser. It's a great web browser to use as in addition to the built in blazer web browser. It uses an online server to re-format the pages to a smaller size before downloading to the treo making it much faster.
    http://www.mobirus.com/eng/products/Xiino/index_html or http://mytreo.net/downloads/details-256.html?Xiino
Unfortunately Xiino uses large fonts (for the old treo 600 screen) so to get high res font to make Xiino more useful, see this thread:
    http://discussion.treocentral.com/sh...ad.php?t=94098
and get the program Fonts4os5 to do this.

    Other essentials:
Resco Explorer and FileZ (for file management) TealMover is good as well.
Verichat, Agile Messenger, or Mundu IM 3 for Yahoo/AOL/MSN/ICQ instant messaging.
AcidImage or SplashPhoto for photo viewing.
SnapperMail or ChatterMail for Email (most people prefer one or the other over built in Verichat)
    Treo 750 (AT&T)
    Treo600->Treo650->Cing8525->Blackberry 8700c->Treo750->AT&T Tilt->Treo750->iPhone 3G

Just curious if this works with the 650? I don't want it, but it seems I've seen mention of it being incompatible.

Seems to depend on what carrier you have.

With some it seems it causes issues with sending MMS.

Gotcha. Well, I'm on Sprint, so I'm not worried about tracking usage.
