I'd like to start of by saying I did search and I've been reading on trying to get a treo.
Not only on this forum but on other forums too but I haven't found answers to my specific questions.
So please excuse me but I would like to get some help from those in the know.

This is how the story goes. Right now I have a sidekick 2. I love the phone and the ease of use and
not to mention the $20 unlimited data plan. However this phone doesn't completely satisfy me as its not
very personalizeable (lol don't know if thats how thats spelled). Anyways I've been reading up on the treo and
even used my sim in a 600 for a couple days but never got it to work completely because the sidekick data isn't compatible
with the treo. Anyways to make a long story short I just wanted to know what data costs would be to operate the treo at
the level of the sidekick. I know a bit about the plans but don't know how the Instant messaging software works.

Basically what I need is instant messaging, pop email, text, mms, and full web browsing.

1)So does this mean I need Tmobiles $19.99 web plan and $14.99 unlimited messaging bundle? This option I wouldn't like because
that would be almost double what I'm paying now.

2)Or can I use tmoible $5.99 web and $14.99 messaging bundle? This I would actually like cus its closest to what I'm paying now.But I don't
want to loose the funtinality of the sidekick.

I know the instant messaging software I would have to purchase separately but thats no problem. I don't know if I'm being clear but
I dint want to drop close to $600 on the 650 and then have to pay double just to get it to do what my sidekick does.

Oh and another reason I'm looking into the treo is the excel, word and other software compatibilities. Although I've read about
the treo crashes and stuff the 600 seemed pretty stable. I didn't have a crash the whole week I was using the 600. Right now
I'm back to using my sidekick but honestly it does seem more of a kids toy because as far as ringtones and other downloadable
media/software goes you have to buy what mommy and daddy tmobile wants you to buy.

I just want to thank those who take the time to read this and post their replies. Your input is very appreciated.

you should look at the gsm forum for t-mo help.

the $20 + $14 would be the easiest to get all u want.

the $5 internet plan? may work, but u may not be able to get it if u tell t-mo that u have atreo. also, i believe, if u do get it, u will need to do someresearch about proxies and stuff.

again, look at the the gsm forum here.

It's gonna be difficult to persuade someone like you who is used to a Paris Hilton device (no offense). The Sidekick 2, along with the Blackberry, were designed for specific purposes. The Sidekick 2 was a better design than it's predecessor, but it's really only good for phone, email, instant messaging, and maybe a game or two. The Treo is a completely different design in that it's kind of like owning a new computer. You don't get Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver with it...you have to go buy it. If you want the Treo to perform the way you want it to (which when it does, it will far surpass anything the Sidekick can do), you will have to shell out the cash for some of the essential programs. Docs2Go and Versamail are free...and will do what you want...but just maybe not in the best way. Instant Messaging will cost you with a program like Verichat...but it does all three; MSN, AOL, and Yahoo.

And by the way, you may want to only look at the 650 and not the 600...you'll be disappointed with the 600 once you find out all the 650 can do.
The only thing that separates the men from the boys...is the lessons they learn.

Im not looking to be persuaded. I know the costs of the programs and thats no problem. But my basic question was if I had the 5.99 t-zones with the proxie work around and the $14.99 messaging bundle cound I use Verichat and browse the real internet( not wap) and set up a pop (Versamail) and not be charged any other charges. I guess I could have made my first post that simple. Sorry.

The $19.95 plan should allow you to do unlimited Instant Messaging on Verichat, pop email, and web browsing. Unless you do a lot of text messaging, I would NOT spend money on the $14.99 messaging bundle. Verichat has an always-on feature, and it uses your data connection for sending/receiving IMs.

There are several other IM software out there that may be more appealing to you than Verichat.

    Good luck.

I recently just switched from the sidekick2 to a treo 600. I have the T-Mobile Internet for $19.99 and Any 400 Message for $4.99. I don't use more than 400 text messages so this was the best plan for me.

I'm being torn the same way...I currently have a sk2 but I am enamored by the 3rd party apps for the treo...the sk2 is easy 2 use and all, but it doesn't let you customize or add 3rd party apps @ will. I am concerned tho that I will be payin a boatload more for a data plan and apps if I switch 2 a treo, but 2 be able to edit word and excel files on the go would be marvelous for my college life. I also want a more business like device...how can I get a cheap treo?

i had a skII before i went for it and got the t650 (sprint). i used the skII strictly for the unlimited data plan while i had my phone plan on sprint. i've only heard bad things about the skII as a phone.

you should go for it and ditch the skII and go for the t650. i totally agree with millsda2's post. your pretty much getting a cpu. the skII is merely a gameboy compared to the t650.

read more on this site and treonauts.com and you will surely be convinced. there are so many apps and features it's overwhelming coming from an skII myself.

All of the previouse poster where correct, but if you want Real Data connectivity I would have to say the Sidekick is the Best. Remember you are posting a pro sidekick comment on a Treo specific Forum. I don't think you will get an un-bias opinion here, so I will try.

for Data, and ease of use of data related services the sidekick is a little beyond the treo. With the sidekick you are probably used to multitasking you data task ie, browser is downloading a web page, while you continue a yahoo or AOL session, then just over to the email app compose message and send it, then back to the im session, then back to the browser and you page has fully load "sorry to confuse you".

But with the Treo, there is no multi tasking. You can only be in Blazer downloading a page. you leave blazer and you page stops. if you are in email you can download a page at the same time.

If you plan to use an Instant messenger program, expect to increase the amount of txt messages you use, because they all use you txt messages to redirect their always on im feature.

So the Treo is a jack of all Trades, master of None, while the Side Kick is a master of Mobile Data use.

    make you decision

IM programs uses either Data or SMS, you control the option. I have tried Toccer, Causerie and Verichat (which I currently subscribe to) and have SMS option turned off.

Long time sidekick user and am now a longtime t600 user. Another thing that is taken for granted is the sidekicks' backend server. If, for some reason, you gotta do a hard reset or exchange phones, your sidekicks' data is safe and can be restored over the air. For the treo, you'll need to get a backup program so all your data, including your user settings, can be backed up to the SD card. I use backupbuddy $10. I've actually had to restore from it a few times..... it truly prevented a disaster each time!

It's not that difficult to get your hands on a free IM app, But you're definitly gonna have to shell out some cash for a competent email app. I'd go with the TREO if I were you. The sidekick is literally a toy in comparison. Example: the treo can view many pages the sidekick won't even bother loading due to javascript problems. Another good example is the money rathole known as the sidekick's catalog. You have to delete apps you paid for to make room for a new app, only to have to repurchase it if you change your mind. On the treo, there are literally 100's of freeware and shareware apps the chose from and the pay programs are yours to keep forever and actually worth what you pay for them. For that reason alone, I'd venture to say that you actually save money by going with the Treo.

yes the sidekick 2 is just a toy as compared to the treo, but when it come to data connectivety, the sidekick is far beyond. i have never seen a page that the treo can download, that the Sidekick 2 could not download, and present better. Sorry the Sidekick2 brower blow the blazer out of the water.
