What firmware do you all recommend I to go back to?

What one was the most stable for you?

Mods, can you post an official voting thread?

    Thanks in advance!
    =========================================
PS... here are the issues I've experienced:

    1. Screen shuts off too quickly... new firmware overrides manual settings (not worth battery savings)
    2. Unwanted redial list pop-up
    3. Doesn't want to wake up with the Red Key sometimes (just flashes & goes dark again, sometimes 3x in a row!)
    4. System sound shuts off!... resets to zero on it's own, I'm wondering if it does that to the phone ringer too occasionally?
    5. Never really had a problem with resets/crashes before... now it happens in the middle of phone ops 2-3x/day.
    6. Overall?, more flakey and less stable.

Acknowledged Improvements (that affect me, anyways):
    1. Yes 1.31 gave us 2-3 MB memory... we like it, but it's not worth interruptions in standard ops.
    2. Blazer speed might or might not be up some... but considering the amount of work able to be done, interruption-free on the machine during the course of a day?...
    3. There may be other enhancements, but nothing I use daily that I'm aware of... maybe they'll make themselves apparent when I go backward.

Nope, going back... not like I want to take the time to do it, but it seems to have reached the point of diminishing returns.

#1 is the only thing I've experienced, of all your issues, and that is clearly a battery saving measure. Not that annoying, IMO.

Thanks for your input, but that doesn't address the question.

No in their minds...I have similar issues and have removed the Cingular update. I went back to the ROW 1.23 then to the 1.30 update then changing to the 1.31 firmware. I now have 1.13 software and 1.31 firmware both ROW version. Seems pretty stable to me at this point. To me the 30sec screen shutoff caused all sorts of issues, from not allowing me to wake up the screen to ending my call when the screen turned off at 30 seconds. It was alway a crap shoot not knowing what it was going to do next. Then, what broke the camels back was some error I recieved when hotsyncing that erased all my preferences and passcodes. what a pain in the **** that was.

I removed it and went back to the ROW version at that point and have not had an issue since.

just my experience, user mileage will vary

agreed i hate the new cing update. the 30sec screen shut off is absolutely horrible. i'm going to try the 1.31 row next.

I thought the 1.31 fw update was extracted from the cingular update? So how could 1.31 fw be ROW?

Same for me. I went back to ROW and updated to 1.31.

Could someone post the process for doing this?

    Thanks

Reading these columns, I concluded that memory space (or the lack of it) is a prime cause for a lot of update problems. So, I did my update a little different.

I sync my Treo first, so now I can get back my data even after a hard reset.

I do exactly that, hard reset my treo. Now my treo has a new born's mind - uncontaminated. I know my Treo will just get the data back by resync. Tried that many times so my comfort factor remains high.

Using Partition Magic and Ghost, I have a partition on my laptop loaded with clean XP. I always have that ghost image ready for testing other stuff anyway, I just re-activate that and restore my "clean ghost". I then added Palm Sync to it. So, I have what is equivalent to a new laptop with newly loaded Palm desktop. Another new-born un-contaminated mind. I use this partition and ghost image to try software often, so my comfort factor remain high.

I sync the new newly loaded XP partition to the just-hard-resetted treo. So, I have a "blank" treo sync to a "blank" laptop. The treo has all the space in the world since nothing has yet been loaded. No background processes or third party apps to get in the way. So, I know I have a high probability of success.

Now I do the upgrade. Clean treo, clean laptop, no problem. Sync it and it ran. Upgraded my fw1.28 1.13row GSM Treo with no problem to fw1.31.

Now using partition magic, I switch my laptop back to my normal partition. Now I get back all my normal junk and my treo data on my laptop. Now I am ready to sync with Treo to get back my data.

I did a hard reset on my fw1.31 updated Treo; it woke up like the clone human in a sci-fi movie: all grown up and ready for a personality. Sync it back with my laptop and life is good again.

Now I am on fw1.31 on row1.13 on the Palm branded GSM Treo.

Holy cow that's a hell of a lot of trouble, why didn't you just rename your backup folder??

I am having no more trouble with 1.31 than 1.28...overall I am happy w/ 1.31.

Regarding the 30 second issue- I installed profile Care and it lets you override the 30 second timeout to whatever length delay you want. I have mine set for 3 minutes during the day and 60 seconds at night...works great.

"...Holy cow that's a hell of a lot of trouble, why didn't you just rename your backup folder??..."

My experience is, programmers doesn't walk on water. They make mistakes. So, I use the most clean cut case - uncontaminated Treo and uncontaminated WinXP. I always have an uncontaminated XP image around so I can test stuff without interference. So, it wasn't so much work for me. Takes only minutes to restore the existing ghost-image I already have at hand.

The time it takes to resolve a problem is generally many times of one could save via shortcuts. Plus, I don't have $600 sitting around to buy another Treo if I really mess up. So I choose the conservative route.

Now I am also sure that the updater didn't leave any junk around on my machine - Treo or WinXP.

Hi everyone, I experienced the same things as Rick Law, except I encountered them when trying to unlock my phone. I eventually tried to unlock it on a friend's "new clean Win XP" machine, and IT WORKED. Guess the problem was my computer.

    My question now is:

I now have a newly unlocked (formerly Cingular) treo with:

    Firmware: 01.05
    Softwear: Treo650-1.04-CNG

I haven't had any major problems, but I haven't installed much on it either.

I'd like to know what the pros and cons would be of updating to some other version?

Thanks everyone, and sorry if the question has been covered, but my mind is not well built for understanding all this stuff without a direct answer for this specific situation.

The most important reason is memory availability and stability. Your current ROM software causes your Treo to use NVFS inefficiently, so that you have much less memory available to store and run apps than someone who has applied the Cingular update (or for that matter, the unlocked GSM update).
