I see all this talk of EV-DO being rolled out by Verizon within the next 6 months, but what's hapenning with the GSM equivalent, specifically by Cingular? Are they going to be setting up 3G service anytime soon?

Then, regarding Cingular's EDGE, is that available in at least most major cities? What are the speeds with that?

    Thanks!

"Cingular is committed to deploying UMTS/HSDPA, the nation's fastest high-speed mobile wireless data network based on international standards, in 15 to 20 markets by 4Q05 and in remaining markets in 2006. The third generation network will offer average data speeds between 400-700 kilobits per second (Kbps), and bursts to several megabits per second on capable devices.
Combination of EDGE and UMTS/HSDPA gives Cingular the nation's premier wireless data network."

Based on GSM, the worldwide standard for cellular communications, EDGE is a software enhancement for Cingular?s General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) data network that can support peak data rates up to 170 kilobits per second with average data rates of 75-135 Kbps.

Unfortunately, unless I'm wrong it won't work with Treos.

You will get a speedup with EDGE, since its a compatible software upgrade. I'm currently seeing EDGE speeds on T-Mobile.

Oh ok, thanks for the info, I'm doing some long-term mental planning for my next phone (Treo, of course!). As for the EDGE, Mr. RFG17 said it's a software upgrade, but do you mean software for the Treos, or software on the Service Provider's side? If it's the Treo side, are there any software upgrades for the T600 that will enable my phone to get those speeds?

Software upgrade on the service provider side. My T650 went from 40Kbps to 70Kbps in EDGE-enabled areas in Boston. That's one EDGE channel's worth. I assume when they roll it out, it will be faster as barye indicated. Since the CDMA T600s can run at that speed on Sprint PCS networks, I would assume the 600 would be able to keep up as well.

The radio in the GSM 650 supports EDGE. The radio in the 600 does not
