Has anyone tried emailing simunlockcode@cingular.com (and successfully been given the unlock codes) recently?

"For security and verification purposes, all requests for SIM unlock codes must be directed to our Customer Service Department which can be reached by calling 1-866-246-4852 or by dialing 611 on your handset."

    Boo!

    Let's see if 866-490-2666 works...

I got the same reply several times with the simunlockcode email address about 8 weeks ago. My first phone call to customer service got me unlocked in about 5 minutes.

That code does not perform the unlock needed so that you can use another carrier's sim card. It removes the lock for YOUR sim card so that you can use another of your carrier's sim cards.

I'm sure about 12,443 other people will post another "universal" unlock code. Seems to happen everyday.

I just talked to the Cingular rep about traveling to Europe and he gave me the unlock code while I held on the phone. Of course I'm a long-time Cingular customer, but they can unlock your phone using eh *#*#unlock code# sequence.

just wondering do you really have to be a Cingular customer in order to make the call? what will the reps prompt you while you call?

OMG!!! Don't you people know how to lie!!!

Call Cingular, tell them you travel overseas a lot and refuse to pay their exorbitant roaming charges. They will give you a bit of a runaround, but they will invariably give you the code. They do NOT want you to go to the FCC and tell them they are raping you with roaming!!! (Just mention it, and see what happens...)

On a related subject, I have had two people contact me this week to tell me there are people selling locked phones but claiming they are unlocked. When they get the phone, they can't use it, and because they don't have a (in both cases) Cingular account, they get no response from Cingular. I called them for one of the people, and they told me that without an account number, they can't access the unlock code.

    Caveat emptor?

Oh I did my lying, but they gave me some BS about having to have service for 6 months and that b/c of my situation (I told them I was leaving next week), she would put a request in, but it could take up to 6 weeks.

She called me back the next day (I must hand it to Cingular... on two separate occasions, Customer Service Reps have called me back to follow up with issues)... and said she was able to get the unlock code.

Plugged it in and TA-DA! Worked like a charm.

Took a collective 1 1/2 hours of lying and about 5 separate calls to make it happen, but it happened.

    Thanks for the help guys!

Urm. Odd. I don't know if it's an easter egg, but if you enter *#*#<8 digits of any kind>#, a dialog appears saying that the sim lock has been removed from the phone. As an example, I tried *#*#12345678# and then "dial" ... and it said "The SIM lock has been removed from the phone" ... doesn't seem like it should be that easy.

I'm a Rogers user in Ontario.

I do have access to other SIMs ... but I don't have any at home here with me.

That's because it isn't that easy. For some reason known only to Palm's programmers, the T650 will display a "successful unlock" message no matter whether the code was correct or not!

However, you should not take that as carte blanche to try any and every code that someone posts here, because many phones (notably Nokias) permanently disable the unlock function if too many incorrect codes are entered. So think twice before you go trying a bunch of codes that you didn't get directly from Cingular yourself.

I got my unlock code from Cingular.

Put it in and wa laa unlocked.

It did say on the email "Be careful, if you try unsuccessfully five times, it will lock the phone permanently"

"if you fail twice, we strongly reccommend that you call us and we will help you"

I am not sure if this is propaganda or not, mine worked first time.

It looks like several of you have actually unlocked the phones. Why don't a few of you post your imei number and unlock code from cingular. it should be pretty straight forward to generate a keygen from this info. we probably only need 3 or 4 sets to do the correlation.

I just called Cingular to try and get my 650 unlocked - I told the rep that I was headed to England at the end of the month and wanted to be able to use my World Phone, which I just found out Cingular was preventing me from using (by locking). She had to fill out some "exception report" and told me I'd get an email within 5 days letting me know whether or not my "exception had been granted". I asked if there was any reason it wouldn't be granted, and she replied - "no, they unlock them all. we just have to jump through hoops to get it done."

I'll let you know when / if the unlock code arrives.

    Dunc,

I'm heading over to Europe for some travel this summer, and just called up and made the same request. They now have to submit the unlock request to the Tech Service and Fraud departments before they will return the code to you.

We'll see how long it takes to get it.

BTW, Cingular's roaming rates in Europe are ~1.30/minute. Yikes!
