For the majority of the country number portability will come much later, many not till May of '04, check map below to see if you're effected right away:

As far as waiting for t-mobile, is anybody still doing that?

    Not I.

If ATT or cingular had better data plans I would switch.

Why not just buy a Cingular Treo 600 and use it on T-Mobile. That's what I'm doing and it works fabulously. With the help of others on this board, I've been able to hack the Cingular logo (even though I liked it) and put a custom one in.

Yep... that's exactly my debate. Today is the last day to buy the Cingular one at discounted price (which I will use on T-Mobile's service). Otherwise my choice is to wait for T-Mobile.... which could be awhile. I'm in a major metro area so number portability is already available. HMMM!! Decisions decisions. I also am not married to T-Mo's service... I could very well switch to Cingular if they'll port my number... BUT, their data plans SUCK! Seems both decisions have their ups and downs... since nobody really knows what "optimization" the T-Mobile ones will have when they are out. I don't mind the TMO being locked since I've heard they'll unlock phones after 90 days (and even if not, I don't plan on jumping ship for quite some time, plus I don't travel internationally).

Boy... what a choice. And only a few more hours to make it

I would advise you to go ahead and order the Cingular version today while you still can, there is a 2-4 week backorder anyway, so if the Tmobile version becomes available in the meantime you could always cancel your Cingular order and place one for the Tmobile optimized one.

If you don't order today, you will be stuck waiting on Tmobile if you want to get one for the $399 owner loyalty discount. The At&t version is sim locked so its not an option for tmobile customers.

    My 2 cents......

Yeah I'm aware of the backorder... at this point I'm in no rush to get the thing so long as the price is right. But if I order it now (Cingular) and the TMO does become available... I can't be 100% sure they'll let me cancel my order and still use my serial number for a new order on the TMO one. That would REALLY suck since then I'd have blown my chances at BOTH of them....

I'd have absolutely no problem waiting for the T-Mobile version if it wasn't for the fact that the speaker is broken on my Treo 180 and since the warranty is expired it would cost an arm and a leg to fix. This is my only reason for impatience, and considering I've been using the 180 in this condition for at least 8 months, what's another month or so gonna hurt? It's just a phone, I feel rather silly for getting all wound up about it

What we do for our toys....

I have the same worries with being able to cancel a Cingular order and re-use my serial number. I have a 270 and it's still working, so my need is not as pressing as yours. But it'd be damn nice to stop checking to see if it's available every day for T-Mobile and being disappointed again and again and again....

Thats what I am doing, but the way T-mo is dealing with this has left me a bad tast in my mouth.

I have 2 serials, so I don't have this issue. If I only had one, I probably wouldn't of ordered the cingular one.

If you trust that t-mo will come out with one in 30 days, why not pay full price for the cingular one and return it when the t-mo is available.

Hmmm... T-Mobile has _never_ officially told me when they are going to release their version of the Treo 600. They haven't even _officially_ told me they would ever support or sell the Treo 600. I can not say that they are not trustworthy then.

Now, if you are basing your expectations on rumor and second-hand information received from this board or other sources, it is quite possible to get all up in a heap about supposed delays and such. (I sure am ready for a tmo 600....) But you sure can't blame the official line from T-Mobile!

How can I trust that T-Mobile will EVER support the Treo 600, let alone within the next 30 days as was suggested??? That was my point exactly.

Why not just call and check, what you are asking sounds reasonable to me.

Of course everyone will make their own decisions, but jaytee not all of the information posted here has been second hand.

There have been at least 2 T-mobile national sales reps that have provided information information to various users here (including myself) about the status and availability of the Treo 600 for T-mobile.

The last information that I received directly (over 2 weeks old now) is that Tmobile engineers still had not officially approved the Treo 600 for their network.

Others including Weebit have stated that there were unresolved software issues and it would be the middle of December before it would be available (last, best estimate).

Obviously some of this information is correct, its not all speculation and conjecture as the Tmobile version is still no
    where to be found.

For all of you waiting on T-Mo, I've come up with the perfect rationalization for buying the unlocked Cingular handset NOW. Let's say that 6 months down the road (after T-Mo has released their version...or not) something goes wrong with your 600 and you call Handpring for a replacement, what do you tell them? Simple. I ported my number over from Cingular where I purchased the phone, but now that I'm on T-Mo I'd like the T-Mo version. I can't imagine anyone not having to replace a handset anyway. I'm only on my 4th 270, and from what I read on TC, I'm one of the lucky ones!

need some advice - I just got off the phone with a TMobile rep in customer care who said that the Treo 600 was available according to her system.

I expressed suprise since I have been watching all of your posts and she proceeded to check with her supervisor who confirmed as well.

She said that she could transfer me to the sales department to buy it but I wanted to check for advice here first before I did so.

How is this possible? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Well, maybe for you that isn't second hand then, but it is for me. I was saying that I have only gotten second-hand information and rumor from these boards. (I have gotten an e-mail or two from one of those national sales reps too. I felt that they knew only slightly more than I did and were much more interested in getting another commission than giving me clear and concise info.)

Yes, that is what I have read from these boards too. I have yet to speak with a T-Mobile engineer actually involved in the testing or with a T-Mobile manager involved in the analysis or application of the results of that testing.

It is not obvious to me that any of the information is correct. It is all speculation and conjecture. No official pronouncement has been made by T-Mobile.

Now, if I speculate, I would say that WeeBit and all have probably received somewhat correct information, there are some issues still to be resolved or tested or approved with the T-Mobile version, and the release date likely has been pushed back to mid-December.

My point was that no one from T-Mobile has officially promised anything to anyone regarding this device, so to say they have deceived you is disingenuous. Maybe I'm frustrated. Maybe I feel like I've been waiting too long in the dark. But... I haven't been deceived by anyone at T-Mobile. Remeber, the original poster said, "Trust T-Mobile? HAH!". That is what I am responding too...

my guess is that if you can order a Treo 600 from T-Mobile today, you probably can't use a serial number to get a discount. So perhaps I won't waste my time. Not worth the aggravation of calling T-Mobile, going through several reps, then calling Handspring, going through several reps, and so on and so forth. Went through that too many times with the release of the 180 and then the 270. I'm trying to sit and wait this time. Thanks to those of you that call, though.

Hey, perhaps this means that the 600 will be available soon (and not just a mis-informed rep). Dare I hope?
