I live in Europe and currently own a Treo 180. I have an unlocked Treo and contacted Handspring on whether I could upgrade to the Treo 600 for $399 (like those with service can do). The reply was:

"Thank you for contacting Handspring.

At this time we do not have an upgrade program for
Treo's without service activation.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause"

I have seen some threads here and some auctions on eBay indicating that the Cingular Treo 600 is unlocked and could thus be used in Europe. Could I thus find someone that is a Cingular Wireless customer (I have some friends in the USA) and ask them to buy one for me?

There are a few questions that I have regarding this:

* Is the Cingular Treo 600 definitely unlocked. Has anyone
here tried it?
* I understand the color is silver, which I like more. Is that
correct?
* Are there external markings (such as logo) on the device
or other hardware changes?
* I know there are some software changes. Can they
be removed by a power user?
* Do you foresee any problems in this idea?
* Has anyone heard anything about how the GSM version
is working (I am a little suspicious of the delays)
