Straight Talk now offering AT&T LTE with supported phones | Android Central
In regards to Straight Talk providing LTE they most defiantly are. I long time webOS user I made the switch over to WP8 a few months back. At the time I was using my old Straight Talk AT&T SIM I used with my veer and Pre 3. Recently I bought one of the new SIM cards ($6.99 with free overnight shipping until Sept 30th if you are interested) and after setting the new APN I have been getting an average of about 17 Mbps and as fast as 24Mbps down with 8Mbps Up. It won't help much with webOS phones but it works great on my Lumia 920.

    Another Straight Talk update:
They finally have set firm limits on their "Unlimited" data.

"30 day Unlimited Plans include 2.5 GB of high speed data per 30 day cycle. After 2.5 GB, your data speed will be reduced for the remainder of the 30 day cycle. High speed data is restored once a new 30 day service plan is added. Other limitations, terms and conditions of service apply.Straight talk reserves the right to terminate your service for unauthorized or abnormal usage. Please refer always to the latest Terms and Conditions of service."

They even have a section talking about streaming and mention several apps like Pandora, Netflix, and YouTube and say that "We're not saying not to use them" Trying to get people to understand how much data those apps use and ways you can use less. Before this all streaming was technically not allowed.

I for one think it is about time there are limits set (and pretty generous I think) A year later and I'm still a very satisfied Straight Talk customer.

My pet peeve has always been the fact that they still use the term "unlimited" when it is not. There should be a limit on what they can call service that throttles back data.... "unlimited" is way too misleading.

I agree the use of "Unlimited" in the past was totally wrong. I do feel that now with their new policy of 2.5 GB at full speed and then Unlimited (in amount, not speed) at 2G speed for the rest of the month it is much more reasonable. It is just a word game though and that's how all the MVNO advertisements I have seen work. It's still better than AT&T when after your 2GB are up they just charge you more.

    Thanks for the update, michaelkriss!

Yeah, I agree it's best they've just finally clarified the terms. Moreso that they seem to be dissolving the "shadow policy" of killing the phone numbers of whom they deem to be a little out of line, if that was ever actually an issue. It's still unlimited in quantity if not quality. A bit misleading, but not horribly. Indeed just puts them on par with other MVNOs.

And I agree, even within these limits it's still a very good deal for some use cases. I know it ideally fits my use. Didn't much care for the "we swear we'll break your legs if you use streaming" threat they had before. I occasionally stream Pandora and still fall well within these limits. So yeah, relieving to hear the worst they'll do is throttle overachievers a little. I've certainly had no 3G issues.

Anyway... for $42/mo (paid online in 3 month chunks), I'm not going to complain about unlimited talk/text, and all the data I actually use. Much prefer it over paying more for things I don't need.

(Looking at you, cable company. I DON'T WATCH TV! )

so do I understand correctly that my older (~1.5 years) Straight Talk/AT&T SIM will not allow me to get LTE on a new phone, but if I buy a new SIM from ST they can switch my number over to it and I will then get LTE service?

I tried with an older SIM card and couldn't get it to show "4G" on my Lumia just "H+" I may have had the APN wrong but I'm not sure. At the time the cards were $7 with free overnight shipping (They are $15 now) so I just jumped on it.
From what I read you do need a new SIM card to take advantage of the LTE speeds. Straight Talk Prepaid Service Now Compatible With AT&T LTE [Update: New SIM Required]

From that link "Existing customers with LTE-capable devices will need to buy a new SIM card and move their number over, according to Straight Talk."

I'd like to add that I hate Verified by Visa. More like "Denied by Visa." The ing system just doesn't work.

If you go to walmart.com, you can get $9 off of three month taxless Straight Talk cards so it's only $42/mo. But they use VbV to authenticate. 90% of the time when I order I immediately get the response from Walmart, "Sorry, this order was cancelled due to a transaction problem" or something like that. Twice I've griped to Walmart, quite certain all the information I provided is correct. "Well, please check your info and try again."

Tonight it happens again after no issue last month. This time I realize it appears the VbV system is simply not working. When I go to the VbV site through my bank, I can't login. I type in the info and submit, nothing happens. After calling (and getting transferred no less than six times) they reset my password. This doesn't change anything. "Sorry, the website must be down. I can't help you."

So I can't buy the freakin' card, unless maybe I start using my PayPal which I hate almost as much as VbV.

Has anyone recently converted a HP Pre 3 over to straight talk? My question is, do you still have to change the settings in the phone app to receive MMS messages? Also, is there any other things I have to look out for?

i'm pretty sure the APN is what determines your LTE vs. H+ only. this has been demonstrated with t-mobile SIMs that require a change from epc.tmobile.com to fast.tmobile.com for LTE.

unless STalk is using same APN but put a restriction on the SIM serial numbers only...if STalk wants to squeeze a couple bucks out of everyone for a new sim.

but i'd test that older STalk sim with the LTE APN first, before buying a new one. if someone does, PLEASE POST YOUR RESULTS. (of course this is not for webOS devices which max at H+)

STalk has conformed to the industry standard now, 2.5g at 4G then throttled back to 2G so they can use the word "unlimited".

Anyone driving a hi-performance car has a REV LIMITER that caps the top speed depending on what the govt. dictates. There's mods to overcome this with most tuner cars. But it is in fact a LIMITER when it prevents you from exceeding a speed. So even though it isn't cutting off the engine completely, it's reducing your speed, and therefore ISN'T UNLIMITED.

Any restriction to full performance is a LIMITER, and thus shouldn't be allowed by the Consumer Protection Agency and True in Advertising Laws.

I'D WHOLE HEARTEDLY SUPPORT A CLASS-ACTION SUIT AGAINST ALL TELECOMS that claim "unlimited" when there is in fact some limiting technology at play.

BUT - thanks to our corrupt Supreme Court, ALL telecoms have clauses that prevent us from class action suits anymore. The only recourse now would be to hassle the CPA to make them stop using the word unlimited when there clearly is a limit in place for most of these mvno's.

but you know the govt. doesn't serve the public anymore. they serve corporations. that's how the "anti-socialism" people want it, and so now corps can do whatever they want. Congrats, oligarchy, you took the Colonies back from the People.

sorry, rant over. lost my temper there. just sick of corporate marketing LIES.

Yes, you have to enter APN settings manually. Or edit your carrierdb.json file.

At any rate, still using my Pre 3 on ATT ST with the settings mentioned on the forum with no issue. Only gotcha is the throttling after 2.5 GB, as mentioned, but don't think I've hit it yet.

Thanks for the info ananimus, I was considering trying the GoPhone plan with at&t for $60 a month with unlimited voice and text with 2gb of data but I think I'll give Straight Talk a go.

Disclaimer: I *had* modified my data habits to wifi at home and work already, of course. Do all my heavy podcast downloading and stuff there. But I do sometimes use Pandora and YouTube on FauxG with no trouble. Also worth noting there's typically no roaming on prepaid plans. Haven't seen any coverage issues on ATT in any metro or outlying areas yet though either, even with lots of travelling.

2.5 gb cap is not really an issue with me because I don't download very much, maybe some Pandora and things, normally with at&t my data usage never goes over 500 mb and also, I work at home so I am always around wifi.

Been using ST on my Pre 3 for about 1.5 years. I go to Walmart and buy the 90 plans. I've never hit the wall on speed. I'm in San Jose and get some pretty good speeds on the HSPA+ with backhaul.

    Yes, I know it's August 2014.

    Yes, I paid $169 for a new Pre 3, unlocked AT&T.

I got me a Straight Talk SIM, and finally got my phone activated.

I'm using this as a business phone, so I wanted to create a new Profile, but this is relevant even to use an existing profile.

I entered all the information for the profile creation (email address, etc).

Then, my beautiful "new" Pre3 wanted to connect to the internet...after some time I got to APN Settings.

For APN settings, after trying a bunch of things and spending 40 minutes on the phone with an ST support dude, then trying some more things, I finally figured out what to enter:

    Internet APN
    Straight Talk

    Leave EVERYTHING else blank.

mrhargett has posted steps on getting to these setttings here...follow steps 1-3.

I will try to figure out the MMS settings, as well as how to post my screenshot on the forum.

    Hope this helps.

Seems there are a ton of different possible settings that may or may not work for people. Mine is "att.mvno", none of the others I've seen posted work.

I've switched to Straight Talk and everything is good so far. My Internet APN is set to tfdata and my Network shows AT&T (not HOME). The Veer I'm using only ever shows 3G though. I've traveled hundreds of miles with this phone over the last few weeks and 3G is the top speed it will show. Download speeds aren't so good either but I don't really use that much data so I guess I don't really care. However, I tested this SIM out in my 4G TouchPad and ATT Pre3 and they both show H+ using tfdata for the APN. What gives?

... does the Veer do H+? i thought it was 3G max.. ? Our Veer is using att.mvno and it does 3G, but I get 4g/h+/whatever on other devices.

It should do H+ just status bar often only gives 3G (leaked 2.2.3/2.2.4 was WR build that only had 3G icon like 2.1.1) but there's a patch for that ;-)
