New AT&T Phone Contracts Dive in 1Q

    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS,April 20, 2011

    http://forums.precentral.net/newthre...newthread&f=61

NEW YORK (AP) AT&T subscribers are still buying iPhones, but with Verizon now selling the phone too, it seems to have lost its power to draw new subscribers to AT&T.

AT&T, the country's largest telecommunications company, reported Wednesday the addition of 62,000 net new subscribers on contract-based plans in the first quarter, a record low. A year ago, the figure was 512,000.

That's good, they deserve it. But the Veer isn't the answer. How about they start by ceasing to lock down their Androids when no other US carrier does?
HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!

Two different stories. One is net gain and the other is device sales.

And you think they're selling smart devices without contracts? Have you seen their no-contract pricing for smartphones? Many people don't have money to burn on phones.

It may look like 2 different things but I'm having a hard time believing they sold a "record" smartphone amount but got that much less in contracts. Something's not right here, unless people really are buying all these smartphones no contract.

People who already have ATT service are probably switching from their 3G and 3GS's to the 4. That's probably why the smartphone sales are still so high yet the new subscriber numbers are low.

    Hi Diva,

Perhaps the Pre 3 is the answer.

    Take care,

    Jay

Thanks for reminding me. You know, I didn't consider the number of existing customers buying new phones that much. Since AT&T seems to have made it harder for many upgraders with yet another price increase, unless it's for the iPhone. New customers get better deals. I should have also considered dumbphone customers upgrading.

The true answer, a new GSM carrier. Or T-Mobile reconsiders this buyout. Or FCC blocks it(which I hope). AT&T is a controlling monster. The Pre 3 will likely be crippled. They only gave Apple control so they could rake in customers, but their true colors shine though with all their other smartphones. They even crippled the PlayBook more than it was and that's an accomplishment.
