Folks the Cingular Wireless Developer site indicated that Cingular is turning up new GSM networks...but in some areas it will be using the 850 frequency. Our beloved Treos only use 900/1900! So that means that we could be in a GSM service area and not have coverage. Worse news...AT&T may go the same route. If anyone has better news I'd love to hear it.

Oh No! not another American only GSM "Standard". This is bad news indeed.

You didn't notice the dozen or so times that I mentioned this in various GSM threads? Both Cingular _and_ AT&T will be using this odd flavor of GSM in areas where they don't have 1900 MHz licenses since they already have 800 MHz coverage over almost everywhere.
